Piano Master Joe Sample Brings Trio To Maryland's Birchmere Music Hall Saturday September 29
Music master Joe Sample is bringing his jazz trio to Silver Springs, Maryland for a special concert at the Birchmere Music Hall, Saturday, September 29, 2012. Sample has just released a fine new Live CD (with singer Randy Crawford), but for this engagement, the spotlight will solely be on his piano mastery and that of his trio which includes world renowned drummer Steve Gadd and his accomplished son Nicklas Sample on upright bass.
Joe Sample is world renowned as a founding keyboardist and composer of the legendary Houston-formed quartet, The Jazz Crusaders. Upon the band’s relocation to Los Angeles, Sample became a broadly demanded player, gracing now-classic recordings by artists that include Marvin Gaye, Steely Dan, B.B. King, Joni Mitchell, Minnie Riperton, Michael Franks, George Benson & Al Jarreau, and Miles Davis. He launched his solo career in earnest with the best-sellers Rainbow Seeker (1978) and Carmel (1979) for ABC Records. Several more arrived followed by a short sabbatical. Upon his return, Sample re-entered contemporary jazz as if he’d never left with the now classic albums Spellbound (1989) and Invitation (1993) – both for Warner Brothers. His first album collaboration with a vocalist was with R&B singer Lalah Hathaway in 1999 but he has most consistently paired with internationally adored Randy Crawford for three fine albums on PRA Records: the Grammy®- nominated Feeling Good (2006), No Regrets (2008) and the just-released Live (2012).
Taking a break to return the focus to his acoustic piano playing in the intimate environ of a piano-bass-drums trio, Sample is in an especially exploratory time period of interpretive and improvisational expression – which will be in brilliant evidence at The Birchmere in Maryland on Saturday September 29th.
