The 28th edition of JazzAscona, “Sophisticated Lady," is dedicated to the role of women in jazz and is proud to present some of the world’s great female artists, alongside stars of jazz and young, undiscovered talents.

JazzAscona is a festival specialized in classic jazz and the music of New Orleans, a grand festival that takes place in a small quaint town and has presented some of the world’s greatest jazz musicians.

Located in Ascona, a charming setting, on the beautiful shores of Lake Maggiore, in the most Southern, Italian-speaking, part of Switzerland, this is a must for jazz fans of any age and taste, a chance to discover undiscovered gems and to appreciate the talent of great stars. With around 200 concerts by 300 musicians during 10 days, the festival offers an outstanding variety of styles – ranging from gospel to early New Orleans jazz, from Chicago style jazz to swing, be-bop, mainstream, blues, and gospel – and of performances, with lakeside evening concerts, hot night jam sessions, and parades through the Ascona alleys.

The 28th edition, from June 21 to July 1st, 2012, is titled “Sophisticated Lady” and wants to highlight and honor the role of women in jazz, with female presences such as the great Queen of Soul, Grammy winner and one of New Orleans’ most renowned voices, Irma Thomas – who will also receive this year’s Ascona Jazz Award –, Hammond organist Rhoda Scott, Germaine Bazzle, aka New Orleans’ First Lady of Jazz, for the first time in Europe as featured artist, American vocalist Niki Haris, Australian bassist Niki Parrott, Swedish trumpeter Gunhild Carling, and Alexia Gardner, winner of last year’s Swiss Jazz Award.

Keep an eye out for emerging talents as well, because this year JazzAscona has a few aces up its sleeve: from trumpeter Bria Skonberg, to New York pianist and singer Champian Fulton, to Emma Pask, all the way to the multitalented Butterscotch, a finalist of America’s Got Talent, the festival is sure to surprise its public.

Alongside all these, and many more, talented women artists, the festival’s 28th edition also includes legends of classic American jazz such as Jon Faddis, Warren Vache, Wycliffe Gordon, and Pee Wee Ellis, James Brown’s saxophonist. Another appreciated presence will be European star trumpeter, singer, arranger, and producer Till Bronner.
