An evening of dynamic new music from live electroacoustic pioneer Earl Howard and FLUX Quartet violinists Tom Chiu and Conrad Harris.
2011 Guggenheim Fellow Earl Howard, a pioneer in the development of live electronic processing and extended instrumental techniques, presents the premiere of his Guggenheim project Superstring, with Wu Wei (sheng, erhu), Alan Jaffe (guitar), Miya Masaoka (koto), Ernst Reijseger (cello), Mark Dresser (bass), Harris Eisenstadt (percussion), and Earl Howard, (Kurzweil K2600). Howard has gathered these musicians from around the world because they are all skilled in microtonal techniques, have developed methods for playing non-pitched or noisy sounds on their instruments and reconstruct their instruments’ original, traditional voices. In Superstring this group will explore stochastic music, polyrhythmic counterpoint, and melodic curves.

Earl Howard creates orchestrated sounds with live electronics. He combines structure and improvisation to form a unique, densely layered composition. His music has been performed at Merkin Hall, The Whitney Museum, The Kitchen, The Knitting Factory, Roulette, The Donaueschingen Festival, REDCAT and Carnegie Recital Hall. Howard has received fellowships and commissions from The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, Harvard's Fromm Foundation, UCSD, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. Recent performances include work with Georg Graewe, Mark Dresser, Gerry Hemingway, Mari Kimura, David Wessel, Thomas Buckner, JD Parran and Anthony Davis. Recent releases appear on New World Records, and Mutable Music. Howard has also collaborated with video artists like Mary Lucier and Nam June Paik.
Pioneering violinists Chiu and Harris present a diverse set of works by Elizabeth Hoffman, Ben Johnston, Alvin Lucier, Giacinto Scelsi, Christian Wolff, and a world premiere by Chiu.

A noted champion of new music, experimental violinist and composer-improviser Tom Chiu has performed over 150 premieres worldwide by influential composers such as Virko Baley, Dean Drummond, Roscoe Mitchell, and Somei Satoh, among others. He has also worked with pioneering improvisers David Chesky, David First, Oliver Lake, and Ornette Coleman, with whom he appeared at the Walker Art Center in 2005. Chiu’s discography includes recordings for the Canteloupe, Innova, Koch, Mode, Sombient, and Tzadik labels. In a mixed-media context, Chiu has created new works with choreographers Eun-Me Ahn and Shen Wei, audio-visual artist Phill Niblock, sculptor Ernesto Neto, conceptual balloonist Judy Dunaway, and director Lee Breuer from avant theater troupe Mabou Mines. His extensive work in film showcases his creative versatility: as composer (Boris), arranger/fiddler (I Sell The Dead), voice-over artist (Chandni Chowk to China), and actor (The Man With One Red Shoe, with Tom Hanks). Chiu holds degrees in music and chemistry from Yale and a doctorate in music from Juilliard.
Violinist Conrad Harris has performed new works for violin at the Darmstadt Ferrienkürse für Neue Musik, Gulbenkian Encounters of New Music, Radio France, Warsaw Autumn, and New York's Sonic Boom Festival. In addition to being a member of the Flux Quartet, he is concertmaster of the New York based S.E.M. Ensemble and the Ostravska Banda, founded in the Czech Republic. He has performed and recorded with such artists as DJ Spooky, Jean-Claude Risset, and Tiny Tim, as featured violinist on his final recording “Prisoner of Love." A solo CD featuring premiers by Alvin Lucier, David Behrman, Robert Ashley, and Gordon Mumma will soon be released on Mode Records. He has also recorded for Asphodel, Vandenburg, CRI, and Vinyl Retentive Records.
