Jazz Showcase is proud to announce the return of singer/songwriter, Laury Shelley, for two shows only on Monday, April 30th at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
In her third return engagement to the Jazz Showcase, Laury will take you on a journey of jazz songs mixed with several songs of her own. Appearing with Laury is four of Chicago's finest musicians: Jeremy Kahn on Piano, Jim Cox on Bass, Bob Rummage on Drums and Mark Colby on Tenor Saxophone.
Singer/songwriter, Laury Shelley, has been a performing artist ever since she can remember. Laury was living her dream touring with composer, Michel Legrand, as Legrand's vocal soloist. During these amazing years, Laury made her debut at the prestigious Carnegie Hall (where the legendary Lena Horne came backstage to praise her), The Sahara Hotel in Vegas, Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, Miami’s Stars Under The Stars Concert Series at Marine Stadium and The Westbury Theatre in New York, as well as concert halls in Toronto, San Francisco, Dallas, Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Los Angeles. Laury has shared stages with Tony Bennett, Buddy Rich, Cleo Laine and John Dankworth while also performing and recording with Phil Woods, Ron Carter, Grady Tate, Randy Brecker and Joe Beck. As a solo artist, Laury has appeared at Jazz Showcase, Katerina's, Coq d'Or & Palm Court at The Drake Hotel, Pete Miller's, Catch Thirty Five and Maxim's in Chicago, Cinegrill in LA, Iridium Jazz Club in NY, Summerfest in Milwaukee, Taste of Chicago and Chicago's Jazz Festival. Last April, Laury reunited with Legrand at The Dakota Jazz Club in Minn.
Last year in March, Laury released a solo recording entitled “Pieces of Dreams", which is available on iTunes and amazon.com. Critic reviews include: WLFM’s Loni Taylor who praised her “amazing vocals"; Russ Davis of MOJA Radio who described her as “a brilliant singer" and the legendary Rick Kogan of WGN and the Chicago Tribune, who called her “Very special...she is the real deal". TV appearances include WGN America’s Midday Show, while in radio Laury was named “Artist of The Month' from WLFM Chicago’s Smooth 87.7 FM and heard on Judy Stadt’s “thelunchandjudyshow" in New York.
On record, Laury can also be heard singing a duet with Michel Legrand of “Pieces of Dreams" on the recording “Michel Legrand and Friends" which was nominated for a Grammy; while also featured on the newly released, Michel Legrand The RCA Years, that includes musical luminaries Lena Horne and Jack Jones.
Saxophonist, Mark Colby, based in the Midwest, has had a sterling career in the music business. Credits include appearing with Tony Bennett, Sonny and Cher, Bill Cosby, Ann-Margret and Sammy Davis, Jr; Gerry Mulligan, Frank Sinatra, Jaco Pastorius, Mose Allison, Joe Williams and Charlie Haden. His recording career includes studio work with Dr. John, Wilson Pickett, Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones, and the Bee Gees. He spent three years with Maynard Ferguson, before joining Bob James, when he became of member of the “James Gang.” Bob signed Mark to Columbia Records, beginning his solo recording career. His projects “Serpentine Fire” and “One Good Turn” both sold very well, while he toured for the next six years as a featured member of Bob James’ band. Currently he is performing as a guest soloist clinician/adjudicator, while being a Selmer Paris Saxophones and Vandoren reeds spokesmen. Career highlights include performing Duke Ellington’s version of “The Nutcracker Suite” with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Leonard Bernstein’s “Prelude, Fugue and Riffs.” Mark's Hallway Records recording Speaking of Stan, a tribute to Stan Getz, was released in 2006 and went to #3 on the jazz radio charts. Mark also can be seen on film in a cameo with Diana Krall in Johnny Depp's “Public Enemies”. In his spare time, Mark teaches at DePaul University as jazz saxophone instructor. He’s still there, and in 1998 joined the faculty at Elmhurst College.
Pianist, Jeremy Kahn, is one of Chicago’s best known musical directors/pianist, having worked with legends Dizzy Gillespie, Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin and Branford Marsalis; well known jazz singer Spider Saloff and is currently the pianist in the Chicago Jazz Ensemble. On the Broadway stage, Jeremy has played in the pit for Wicked, Spamalot, The Lion King, Les Miserables and Aida. Jeremy has also been a featured performer at the Chicago Jazz Festival, while also being heard on the radio shows of Studs Terkel and Marian McPartland.
Percussionist, Bob Rummage, maintains a versatile schedule of performances with a variety of Chicago ensembles ranging from Rob Parton’s Jazz Tech Big Band to the music of the Mark Colby Quartet and Howard Levy to Andy Brown, while also appearing with many internationally known musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Nat Adderly, Benny Golson, Buddy DeFranco, Bela Fleck, Mose Allison. His recording career includes sessions for Cheez-Its, Gallo wines and AT&T as well as appearances with Frank Mantooth, Steve Weist, Rob Parton, Colby/Caruso and Bob Lark. Bob is currently the percussion director at Elmhurst College, where he is a much sought after clinician having made appearances at various high schools and colleges including the University of Illinois, University of Kentucky and Emporia State.
Bassist, Jim Cox, started his career with a 5 year stint with the legendary Earl “Fatha" Hines. Having appeared with legend Marian McPartland for over 20 years, Jim has shared his passion for the bass during concerts and nightclub acts with many a well known singer. Amongst the list are Rosemary Clooney, Michael Feinstein, Debbie Boone, Judy Roberts, Spider Saloff, The Maxwell Street Klezmer Band and jazz mandolinist Don Stiernberg. As a studio musician Jim has appeared on over 100 LPS/CDS and currently teaches at Lake Forest College and North Central College in Naperville.
