Clogs may be the most unusual chamber quartet you're likely to hear. Blending guitar, viola, bassoon and percussion, they're part of a new wave of neo-classical groups who aren't afraid to draw together music from many sources and include improvisation in the mix.

Their latest and fourth release, Lantern, may be their best yet. While the four members of Clogs live in various locations from New York to Australia--coming together typically only for recordings and touring--AAJ contributor Paul Olson took advantage of an opporunity to catch guitarist Bryce Dessner and violist Padma Newsome in the same place at the same time to speak with them about the new album and more. His interview demonstrates how bringing together strong musical minds--sometimes in opposition to each other--can result in surprisingly cohesive and focused results.
