The Telluride Jazz Festival is pleased to announce that two time Grammy award winner Roy Hargrove will be the esteemed guest of honor for 2012. Now in its 36th year, the Telluride Jazz Festival has welcomed one of the greatest names in jazz as guest of honor every year since 1998. Legendary musicians such as James Moody, John Scofield and Stanley Turrentine have held this distinctive honor. Hargrove is the youngest guest of honor (42 years old) and the first trumpet player.

Roy Hargrove first rose to prominence at the age of 16 when he was discovered by Wynton Marsalis at a jazz clinic at Hargrove's high school in Fort Worth. Marsalis invited Hargrove to play with him and a star was born. The guest appearances led to invites from Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard and Bobby Hutcherson over the ensuing months. This past week, Hargrove was nominated for Best Improvised Jazz Solo Grammy for “Ms. Garvey, Ms. Garvey," from his first big band album, 'Emergence.'

Very rarely do you find a musician who plays on such an elite level across as many jazz genres as Hargrove. He won his first Grammy in 1998 for the album Habana with Cristol, an afro-cuban band he founded. Then in 2002, Hargrove won another Grammy for a three-way collaboration, Directions In Music which he recorded with Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker. He has further ventured into the black pop mainstream as a collaborator with edgy soul star D'Angelo and guest appearances on albums by neo soul priestess Erykah Badu, thought-provoking rapper Common, and English acid jazz DJ/producer Gilles Peterson.

The guest of honor plays a very special role at the Telluride Jazz Festival. Not only is the main stage in Town Park named after them, but they often sit in with several bands throughout the weekend and in turn invite special guests to play with their own band. 2011 attendees might remember last year's exceptional set where guest of honor Paquito D'Rivera played host to several of the world's best up and coming musicians. Telluride Jazz Festival patrons and sponsors are invited to meet the guest of honor at a special party on the Thursday before the music begins.

The 36th Annual Telluride Jazz Festival takes place August 3-5, 2012 in Telluride Town Park. 3-day passes are currently available for only $99 at telluridejazz.org.
