's Masada quartet, trumpeter Dave Douglas has emerged as one of modern jazz's freest thinkers, with a seemingly endless flow of ideas. Over nearly 20 years, he's created an almost unparalleled number of memorable groups, including Keystone, Charms of the Night Sky and Tiny Bell Trio, in addition to a number of forward-thinking one-off projects like Witness (RCA/Bluebird, 2001).
A lot has happened since All About Jazz spoke with him in 2006, and so contributor Dave Wayne grabbed the opportunity to speak with the busy trumpeter about what he's been up to, specifically his recently inaugurated Greenleaf Portable Series, a collection of three new sets of music for three different groups that, while originally intended as download-only, has been so well-received that Douglas has bowed to demand and released them—Rare Metals, with his Brass Ecstasy quintet, Orange Afternoons, by a brand new, all-acoustic quintet, and Bad Mango a first-encounter with intrepid new music ensemble So Percussion
