In spite of its hallowed historical role as America's only original art form, jazz has often been criticized for “living in the past." For many contemporary listeners, jazz has been “trapped in amber," content to recycle the popular musical forms of a half-century ago. While there may be an element of truth in this observation, often times the “fresher" music these critics embrace involves nothing more than a “rock" component. Hardly ground-breaking stuff!

What is more relevant for the jazz community's survival and growth is the willingness to embrace new technologies in the presentation of the music. Vinyl, cassettes and even CDs are mere relics of the past; it is necessary to jump into the cyber world in order to reach today's listening audience.

Dr. Bobby Rodriguez, L.A.'s own latin jazz trumpet master, composer and educator, is doing his part to bring jazz into the 21st century. Rodriguez will host the inaugural broadcast of “Jazz it Up," his new live jazz webcast, this Sunday June 26th at 5pm PDT.

The program's premiere “webisode" will be a tribute to jazz guitar legend, Kenny Burrell, on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The “live" broadcast will include a performance by Burrell and his Jazz Heritage All Stars, as well as interviews with Burrell and other jazz greats. If you are unable to tune in on Sunday, the program will be available until July 25th.
