Baltimore, MD—"The Roots of Jazz Baltimore The Movers, Shakers and Music Makers" an exhibit curated by Jazz singer/author/historian Tamm E Hunt celebrates Black Music Month and provides glimpses of Baltimore's historic Jazz life from the 1920's through the present day. The exhibit is hosted by Enoch Pratt Free Library Central Branch, in the Annex corridor, 400 Cathedral Street, Baltimore, MD from April 1 through the summer of 2011. The display can be accessed during the library's hours: Mon-Wed 10 am-7 pm; Thu-Sat 10am-5 pm; Sun 1pm-5 pm.
Hunt has created a montage of exceptional Baltimore Jazz moments from local street musicians “Snow Ball" and “Tomb Stone" to world class performers Cab, Blanche and Elmer Calloway, drummer Chick Webb, banjoist Elmer Snowden, singer Billie Holiday and Ragtime piano king, Eubie Blake. Images of Pennsylvania Avenue's Royal Theatre; performers Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters, Pearl Bailey, Louis Jordan, Ruby Glover, Mickey Fields, Roy “Tangle Foot" McCoy, The Left Bank Jazz Society; and Charlie Tilghman's Sphinx Club all validate Baltimore as a major Jazz center and contributor to America's indigenous music called Jazz.
ABOUT TAMM E HUNT
In 2002, Hunt was inspired to research, collect, and document Baltimore's jazz scene after finding newspaper clippings from the Afro American Newspapers and photo images in an old trunk in her mother's basement. Ms. Hunt's music business expertise has given birth to an online magazine, BaltimoreJazzine.com, where she serves as publisher and editor. In 2003, The Maryland State Senate named her a Maryland Jazz Ambassador, an honor she takes so seriously, that she began writing and compiling the book “The Roots of Jazz Baltimore: The Movers, Shakers and Music Makers" for The History Press (Release date: 2011).
Her lectures on Jazz have been presented at The City College of New York, New York University Graduate School, Bryn Mawr School for Girls, Walter's Art Museum and other notable institutions. An acclaimed vocalist, Tamm E Hunt has performed and recorded with some of the biggest national and international names in Jazz. She co-stars as Sara with alto saxophonist Gary Bartz in the award winning film short “A Jazz Story" and headlined in the Off Broadway in “Billie Holiday: The Legend.
