Brazil-based vocalist Patty Ascher has just released a new album, Bossa, Jazz 'n' Samba, that further solidifies her as among that country's finest jazz talents. Her sultry, playful singing, equally skilled in both English and Portuguese, is stronger than ever, ensuring high entertainment value for any listener. Ascher took some time from her busy schedule to discuss her life and career.

Q: What made you want to become a singer?

A: I was born in a family of musicians so it was something inevitable. It was a long road, but I finally found my way.

Q: What artists did you look up to growing up?

A: Nat King Cole. His voice, his talent, his natural charm is something truly amazing for me. Besides Nat, I love Cab Calloway. To me, he's perfect as an artist: singing, dancing, performing. That's something hard to find nowadays.

Q: How old were you when you decided to enter the musical field?

A: Actually, I did not decide; it was something from destiny. I was 35-years-old when Roberto Menescal, one of bossa nova's fathers, invited me to record my first album of Burt Bacharach's greatest hits in a bossa nova style. Then I felt that is was a great chance to enter the musical field as a singer. I was right. That album changed my life forever, and it is a best seller here in Brazil.

Q: How have your views on music changed at this stage in your life now compared to when you were just starting out?

A: Oh, that's an important question. Today, I am so relaxed on stage, and I feel the audience by my side because they love to hear good music like me so we're together all the time. Another important issue: I don't care anymore for the music business. I do my music. I give my heart and my soul.

Q: When will you be touring the U.S.?

A: I'll be touring the U.S. from late August to early September. We'll have concerts in wonderful jazz venues in Miami, New York, Washington, D.C., Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego. I'm very happy about that. Touring the U.S. is a great honor for me.
