George Kahn With the Award-Winning SaMoHi Jazz Band at Catalina Jazz Club, Sunday June 12

A special afternoon “Jazz Brunch" for lovers of both Big Band and Small Group Jazz will be presented at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood on Sunday, June 12 from Noonש:00 PM. George Kahn and his Quintet featuring special guests Doug Webb on sax and Steve Reid on trumpet open the show, followed by the award-winning SaMoHi Jazz Band under the direction of Tom Whaley.

Earlier this year, the Santa Monica High School Jazz big band and combo competed in the 43rd Annual Berklee College of Music High School Jazz Festival, the largest high school jazz festival in the world, at Hynes Auditorium in Boston. Samohi ended the 13-hour day triumphantly, sweeping the top awards at the festival: first place in the highest division: Division 1- Big Band and Division 1- Jazz Combo.

300 bands, comprised of 3,000 students from all over the country, performed in front of judges from the Berklee College of Music in six divisions determined by size of school. Samohi competed in the highest and most competitive class, consisting of schools with enrollment of 1,500 or more students.

In addition, two Samohi students were named top soloists in the festival. Jake Noveck (guitar) won the first place award for soloist. Steven Gordon (piano) received the second place soloist award in the big band portion of the Festival, and the lead trumpet player, Eli Brown, won the “Outstanding Musicianship" award. These award winners will be jamming with the George Kahn Trio to start the show.

GEORGE KAHN has been compared in style to Dave Brubeck, Vince Guaraldi and Wynton Kelly. His music pays tribute to such jazz greats as Horace Silver, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Gil Evans and Les McCann. George has played and recorded with jazz luminaries such as Billy Higgins, Eric Marienthal, Bobby Rodriguez, Ernie Watts, Joe Labarbera, Brian Bromberg and Alex Acuna. His music captures the feel of the West Coast jazz scene of the 50's, but with a modern edge.
