News about Mike Smith

To Washington area jazz musicians and friends,

As you may or may not of heard, drummer Mike Smith has cancer and needs your help. I'm forwarding a note from his family and I've setup a payment form on the website to accept donations.

Please forward this email to anyone who you think knows Mike.

Thanks,

As many of you may know, Mike is in the hospital after breaking his hip about two weeks ago. What you may not know is that Mike is suffering from the effects of prostate cancer that has spread to his lower extremities. The cancer is what led to the break in his hip. The hip joint was removed but could not be replaced with a prosthetic hip. However, we are looking for a specialist who may be able to help.

The pain from the cancer is severe, so he is on pain medication and receiving radiation treatment. Mike remains in fairly good spirits and is hoping he'll be able to get up and around soon. It looks like he may be able to go back to his apartment next week.

Now that Mike is unable to work, he could use help in paying rent and medical expenses. If you would like to donate money to help him meet these expenses, please do so through this website. Any amount will be much appreciated.
