Steve Khan's "Parting Shot (Golpe de Partida)" Released April 26 (Tone Center)
STEVE KHANPARTING SHOT (GOLPE DE PARTIDA)
For guitarist Steve Khan, PARTING SHOT" (Golpe de Partida) marks his fourth release for Tone Center Records. It follows THE GREEN FIELD"; the Grammy nominated, BORROWED TIME"; and the spectacular double-live recording, THE SUITCASE." It marks the first time since 1994 and CROSSINGS" that Steve reunites Eyewitness: Anthony Jackson (contrabass guitar); Dennis Chambers (drums); and Manolo Badrena (percussion)but this time, there is something different, very different. They now combine the looseness of their improvisations, while adhering to the tenets of Latin music and the all-important clave. To best accomplish this, Steve wanted the presence of dear friends and masters of the idiom, Marc Quiones (timbal) and Bobby Allende (conga).
The result is a stunning adventure in Latin Jazz and probably the first time in decades that a guitarist has presented a recording like this, the last being the great Grant Green. The program of music offers seven new Khan originals and inventive interpretations of Thelonious Monk's Bye-ya" and, Ornette Coleman masterpieces: Chronology" and Blues Connotation." Perhaps the highlight is Mara Mulambo" which pays tribute to James Brown's Doin' It to Death" groove which is conjoined with an infectious Afro-Cuban 6/8 feel, and Manolo Badrena's vocal, sung in Brazilian Portuguese. The groove is relentless! Influence Peddler" features two most special guest vocalists as Brazil's Tatiana Parra and Argentina's Andrs Beeuwsaert (Aca Seca Trio) join the core group of musicians for a most unique blending of genres.
PARTING SHOT" features brilliant performances from Khan and fiery drum and percussion solos from Chambers, Quiones, and Allende. But what would one expect from a recording that is sure to be regarded as a classic in the Latin Jazz genre. There has been nothing like this one, that's for certain!! The recording was engineered by the great, James Farber, who also recorded CROSSINGS." The sound created by all is one of power and clarity.
For the first time, the cover art features a striking image from French artist, Michel Granger. This realizes yet another dream for Steve as he has been a Granger fan since the mid -'70s. The look of the package will remain familiar to all Khan fans.
