The Jazz Arts Group of Columbus (JAG) offers a stellar line-up of music making opportunities to engage all ages and interests with workshops and clinics at the Jazz Academy community instructional space in the Lincoln Theatre complex. With nearly 5,000 square feet, the Jazz Academy is a premier facility for multi-generational and recreational music making, ensemble playing, after-school programs, technology instruction and lectures with world-class musicians.

Join jazz and Latin-jazz artist Bobby Sanabria Thursday, April 28 at 7:00 PM as he uses the five-beat rhythm of the clave as the key to unlock the roots of Afro-Cuban music and reveals the voices of the ancestors. Playing a wide variety of percussion instruments and a full drum set, Sanabria takes audiences on a poly-rhythmic musical journey through history. Influenced by history, politics and religion, the rhythms of Africa create the rich array of musical styles we now call Latin music with an emphasis on a shared musical tradition and a mutual respect for all cultures. Bringing us into present day America, Sanabria will demonstrate how the five-beat clave remains at the core of such musical styles as rock & roll and hip-hop. This free workshop is presented by: LP, Remo, Sabian, TAMA, Vic Firth, and The Roberto Ocasio Foundation.

On Saturday, May 7 at 2:00 PM, flutist Ali Ryerson and pianist Steve Rudolph will explore, discuss and demonstrate both the advantages and the challenges of performing in a jazz duo. All instrumentalists (not limited to flute or piano) interested in playing for and with Ali and Steve will be individually coached, master class style. A variety of topics pertaining to duo performance will be discussed, including rhythmic contrast, creating tonal and textural variety, phrasing, listening and reacting, maintaining musical momentum, dynamics, choosing repertoire, how/what to practice, creating set lists, and booking gigs. Registration fee is $20 ($15 for community partners), and please bring your instruments.

The Jazz Academy will also host the Columbus Music Co-op's next free workshop about health care and insurance for musicians (Sunday, May 8, 2:00 PM).
