Jazz Vocalist Karin Okada at Brooklyn-Queens Conservatory of Music November 19

Jazz vocalist Karin Okada will perform at Brooklyn-Queens Conservatory of Music with her quintet on Saturday, November 19 at 8:00 PM as part of the Conservatory's Faculty Showcase series. Okada will present a concert of jazz standards and originals. Tickets for the performance are $10; $5 for students/seniors, and are available now by calling 718-622-3300. Brooklyn-Queens Conservatory of Music is located at 58 Seventh Avenue, at Lincoln Place, and is accessible by the Q or B trains to 7th Ave. or the 2 or 3 trains to Grand Army Plaza.

Vocalist and composer Karin Okada is a winner of Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead, a scholarship recipient of the BMI Jazz Composer's Workshop, and recipient of an O-Ta Best Musician's Award. Born in Japan, Karin was raised in England from the age of 13. At 18 years of age, Okada moved to Boston, Massachusetts and attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music. Currently based in New York City, Okada trained under jazz legends Sir Roland Hanna and Sheila Jordan, as well as Carnegie Hall big band arranger Mike Mossman. Okada brings her personal style to a standard repertoire list that includes popular composers such as Cole Porter, Jerome Kern and Antonio Carlos Jobim, while her original compositions emulate modern jazz greats like Wayne Shorter.

With locations in Brooklyn and Queens, the Brooklyn-Queens Conservatory of Music is one of the oldest and largest non-profit community schools of the arts in the nation.
