Oscar Lalo's Enchanting Jazz/Chanson Francaise Amalgam

Frenchman Oscar Lalo's new CD, “Un Peu De Toi," is unique fusion of Jazz and French music.

Inspired by Django Reinhardt and the Music of Hot Club of France with Stephan Grappelli, as well as French legends Jacques Brel, Serge Gainsbourg, and Michel Legrand, there’s a simple, pure and unaffected feeling to Oscar Lalo's music that crosses language barriers.

Recorded in Paris in collaboration with Abaji, a multi-instrumentalist of Syrian/Turkish/Armenian/Greek roots who wrote most of the songs,"Un Peu De Toi" continues the French tradition for songs which are snapshot-of-life descriptions. Lalo is backed by an all-star French group that includes Abaji's guitar, along with cello, violin, bass and drums.

A singer/songwriter now based in Montreux, Switzerland, Oscar Lalo grew up loving both Jazz and French music. While a Berklee student, he worked US jazz clups as a vocalist, perfecting his craft. Returning to Europe, he took his love of Jazz, and the music of his childhood and put them together for an enchanting fusion.

The French song—or la chanson francaise—is making a comeback these days. Inspired by legendary performers such as Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel, a new generation of artist like Oscar Lalo, has embraced the form as a vehicle for their own creativity.
