Sat Oct 08 JOHN MCNEIL'S INSOMNIA BAND (John McNeil, trumpet; Mike Fahie, trombone; Jeff Lederer, tenor saxophone & clarinet; Mike McGuirk, bass; Jochen Rueckert, drums)

John McNeil's Insomnia band first came into existence as an adaptation of the music on Sleep Won't Come, John's 2004 release on OmniTone. The band's debut came at FONT (The Festival of New Trumpet Music) in August of 2004, and the music has since morphed into something very different. The Sleep Won't Come music is still represented, but there is now a body of music specific to Insomnia.

Much of the Insomnia music is free, but held together with ensemble writing and thematic unity. McNeil gets the most out of the instrumentation of trumpet, tenor sax, trombone, bass and drums, and his writing continually finds new color combinations and surprising twists and turns. The real key to Insomnia's success, however, is that the band members have an overall compositional sense and a willingness to harness their own creativity to further the ends of the ensemble. Finding people willing to check their egos at the door can be difficult, but bands like Insomnia prove it can be done.

McNeil renders anthem style choruses amid vocal-like phrasings to complement a robust tone, awash with razor sharp lines. -- jazzreview.com 9:00PM Cover $10 www.mcneiljazz.com

Sun Oct 09 LOUISE ROGERS/RICK STRONG: BASS-ICALY SPEAKING (Louise Rogers, vocals; Rick Strong, bass) The idea of a small ensemble had always interested us. We were drawn to and fell in love with the bass and voice concept: the intimacy, the space, and the woody, organic, acoustic sound.

“Masterful performance...refreshing to hear...this music is exposed and draws you into it." -Jerry Bergonzi - jazz saxophonist and teacher

“Achieves a beautiful mood with the voice and bass." Luciana Souza - Jazz vocalist

Tue Oct 18 ZOHO MUSIC DOUBLE HEADER HILARY NOBLE & REBECCA CLINE + RICHIE HART TRIO 8:30 PM HILARY NOBLE & REBECCA CLINE CD release party for the Hilary Noble & Rebecca Cline ZOHO release “ENCLAVE" Hilary Noble - tenor, soprano & alto saxophones, flute, percussion, Rebecca Cline - piano,Fernando Huergo - electric bass, Steve Langone - drums

Hilary Noble and Rebecca Cline have taken care to acquire solid foundations in the jazz and Afro-Latin traditions. Hilary has studied saxophone with George Garzone and Yusef Lateef in the U. S., and percussion with Maximino Duquesne in Cuba. Rebecca has studied piano with Joanne Brackeen and Charlie Banacos in the U.S., with Luis Marin in Puerto Rico, and with Chucho Valdés in Cuba. They have also played with some of the torchbearers of the music, including Giovanni Hidalgo, Bobby Sanabria, and John Santos.

“Although not all the charts are Latin--Noble's affecting ballad “Relapse" being one of several examples of the performers' straight jazz skills--the program features such Cuban forms or rhythms as mozambique, bembe, rumba, guaracha as well as Dominican merengue, Brazilian samba and Venezuelan joropo. The rhythmic texture of these pieces is consistently thick and rich and can produce an irresistibly propulsive momentum. Sanabria and his rhythm section are experts at this, but Noble fits in with them easily. He contributes on various percussion instruments, most often congas, as well as on his several saxophones, even overdubbing soprano, alto and tenor parts on one track. He also composed most of the pieces."

“While the excitement of the Latin rhythmic ambience is the recording's most striking feature, several very fine improvised solos also contribute to its appeal."

Their new CD just released on the NY based Zoho label “Enclave" will be celebrated at this performance. www.hilarynoble.com
