On Monday March 7, 2011, Thirsty Ear takes the stage at (Le) Poisson Rouge in New York City for a night of inspired and provocative jazz.

Avant-garde luminary Matthew Shipp will be performing alongside Michael Bisio and Whit Dickey. Representing the new giants of jazz will be the highly touted trio of Mary Halvorson, Weasel Walter and Peter Evans.

This will surely be an exciting event, as Matthew is on the verge of releasing his 50 year opus, “Art of the Improviser," and Walter/Halvorson/Evans are on the heels of their electrifying studio debut “Electric Fruit."

We hope you'll come out for this “show-and- tell demonstration of the immense talents of tomorrow's—and, maybe today's—creative giants" (All About Jazz).

Visit (Le) Poisson Rouge's website for more information and ticketing.

About the Artists

Matthew Shipp's Art of the Improviser is his most audacious attempt yet to answer the enigmatic question of what it means to be a modern jazz musician. Already having explored the possibilities of electronically infused jazz on critically acclaimed projects with the likes of DJ Spooky, Scanner, and Anti-Pop Consortium, Shipp revisits an acoustic sound for this fearless voyage into the psyche of the improviser. Juxtaposing traditional instrumentation with adventurous phrasing and poignant melodies, Shipp continues to challenge musical conventions with his heady playing.

Guitarist Mary Halvorson has been active in the New York music scene since 2002. She plays with two of her own bands, The Mary Halvorson Trio and Quintet, and co-leads a chamber music duo with violist Jessica Pavone. Mary is widely considered one of New York's most rousing current guitarists.

Drummer Weasel Walter is best known as leader of and primary composer for the long- running cult punk band The Flying Luttenbachers. Living in Chicago, the Bay Area, and most recently New York, Walter has spent the past two decades bridging numerous factions within the experimental music scene.

Peter Evans performs with groups ranging from terrorist-bebop unit Mostly Other People Do the Killing to trumpeter Nate Wooley and the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE). Recent recordings include a 2-disc set of solo trumpet music, Nature/Culture, as well as Live in Lisbon, an album of quartet music recorded at the Jazz em Agosto Festival 2009.
