SPECIAL EVENT Saturday, Oct 7, 2005 Dinner from 6:00pm, Supper club First Show at 8:00pm: CHICO FREEMAN QUARTET with Chico Freeman-tenor sax and Hilton Ruiz-piano.
Expect to hear a spectrum of jazz, a slice of recent jazz history, as Chico and Hilton take us on a journey from loft jazz in '77 to Freeman's latest y Guataca" - Oh, By the Way". Go to http://www.chicofreeman.com to listen. Chico Freeman first recorded with Hilton Ruiz in 1977 and included him as pianist on Beyond the Rain" (Contemporary) with Elvin Jones. Hilton Ruiz was also with The Leaders". Ruiz returned the favor by including Freeman on Enchantment" (Arabesque) playing on three of Ruiz's originals, I'll Call You Later" - a blues that he makes swing; Sweet Cherry Pie" - a boogaloo groove plus Home Cookin'" interrupted only for a second by an exciting squeal of delight, reminiscent of the loft jazz scene, leading into a most memorable tenor solo. Ask them during intermission and expect to hear how both compress all of jazz history into each solo.
