Chicago Jazz Ensemble: An Evening with Cedar Walton and Corky Siegel, Saturday, October 8, 2005

The critically acclaimed Chicago Jazz Ensemble performs with Artistic Director, trumpeter Jon Faddis, for “An Evening with Cedar Walton and Corky Siegel” at Columbia College Chicago’s Getz Theater on Saturday, October 8 at 8:00 pm. For this special concert, the Chicago Jazz Ensemble – a twenty-one-member group of Chicago’s exceptional musicians – will be joined by two featured guests, the jazz pianist and composer Cedar Walton, and blues harmonica master Corky Siegel, for an intimate evening.

Cedar Walton “pack(s) plenty of rolling bluesy thunder” and his Jazz piano is “as good as it gets” for classics, including his own compositions (Time Out New York, 2005). Walton is most often heard with smaller though superb ensembles; on this special evening, though, Walton will be performing full, big-band arrangements of his own compositions with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble – “the city’s premier big band” (Time Out Chicago, 2005), offering a rare opportunity for listeners.

The concert will also include a remembrance and tribute to distinguished composer/conductor William Russo (1928 – 2003), the founder of the Chicago Jazz Ensemble and Columbia College Chicago’s Music Department. The tribute will feature a film retrospective of his career. Russo’s work as an educator will be remembered by his former student, Chicago Reader Arts Critic Albert Williams. Columbia College Chicago’s Music Department Chairperson, J. Richard Dunscomb, will announce the new William Russo Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Music. Chicago’s own Corky Siegel will perform the harmonica solo “Corky” from Chicago Suite No. 2 – a piece written especially for him by Russo – as part of the tribute, and concert-goers will also be treated to Siegel’s impeccable blues-infused musicality on other favorites.

“An Evening with Cedar Walton and Corky Siegel” is the second of seven performances marking the 40th Anniversary Season for the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, in residence at Columbia College Chicago since 1965. With the appointment of internationally celebrated trumpeter Jon Faddis as Artistic Director in 2004, the Chicago Jazz Ensemble continues its mission to represent, preserve and promote the innovative traditions of American jazz music.
