Mon Sep 19 MICHAEL MARCUS QUARTET FEATURING TED DANIEL (Michael Marcus, saxophones; Ted Daniel, trumpet; Mike Bisio, bass; Jay Rosen, drums) Michael Marcus brings together some of the finest members of the jazz world to perform his latest compositions in a rare appearance in NYC!!

Michael Marcus has been an active member of the New York jazz scene for over 20 years. Since releasing his debut recording, “Under The Wire" (Enja,1991), he has continued to be part of the cutting edge in American improvised music, touring the festival and club circuits recently both in the US and Europe with his trio of bassist Tarus Mateen and drummers Jay Rosen or Nasheet Waits. Michael now has 12 recordings as a leader, all on internationally recognized Jazz labels (Justin Time, SoulNote, Enja). Marcus has performed and recorded with: Albert King, Bobby Blue Bland, Sonny Simmons (with whom he fronts the Cosmosamatics group), Jaki Byard, Rahn Burton, Billy Higgins, Carlos “Patato” Valdes, Jymie Merritt, , Warren Smith, Fred Hopkins, Philip Wilson, Roy Campbell and Carlos Ward. He has also been associated with the Makanda Ken McIntyre Ensemble, Grachan Moncur's big band, Zane Massey and the Liberation Suite , Jemeel Moondoc's JUS GREW Orchestra, Oakland legend Vince Wallace, trombonist Joe Bowie's Defunkt, and Saxemble (with Frank Lowe and James Carter & Cindy Blackman) and many more great artists, globally. Mr. Marcus, one of the last individuals to receive a performance grant from the NEA (National Endowment of the Arts) composed the string arrangements to his original music. These compositions were performed for the first time with a string quartet in November 1998 during a concert at the University of Memphis , as part of a Southern US tour and again in September 1999 at New York City Museum Of Modern Art. A classic session of Marcus' from 1993 was recently issued for the very first time entitled “Ithem" (Ayler records) with bassist William Parker and the late drummer Denis Charles, and also, his first highly acclaimed unaccompanied recording “Speakin Out" (Drimala,2002). Michael (2005) has had the exceptional reward performing with the legendary drum master Edgar Bateman in a “duo" context, along with his continuation in touring/recording internationally with The Cosmosamatics and his quartet w/Ted Daniel.

Michael Marcus comes out of Coltrane, Kirk, and Dolphy, but has his own sound. -Downbeat Magazine 8:30PM

This versatility has made her a regular at New York clubs including Chez Suzette, Makor, The Knitting Factory, Swing 46 and The Bubble Lounge. She has extensive experience leading small groups, has worked with big bands including the Oded Lev-Ari Big Band and the Toronto All-Star Big Band and also has experience singing back-up vocals for various bands including Pharaoh's Daughter. JOHN HOLLENBECK'S THE CLAUDIA QUINTET (John Hollenbeck, composition/drums/percussion; John Hebert, bass; Ted Reichman, accordiona; Chris Speed, clarinet/tenor sax; Matt Moran, vibraphone) The Claudia Quintet, celebrating the soon to be released"Semi- Formal" on Cuneiform Records.

Drummer/percussionist John Hollenbeck is an ambitious person. Not only does he play with a host of others like the Vanguard Orchestra (Thad Jones & Mel Lewis' band), Meredith Monk, Bob Brookmeyer, Cuong Vu and others, he also leads several of his own groups. This wide variety of opportunities affects his music considerably, making its mark on ensembles like the Claudia Quintet, Quartet Lucy, his duo with vocalist Theo Bleckmann, and other collectives to which he contributes.

As for the Claudia Quintet specifically, a great deal of time has been spent by listeners, writers, etc., trying to accurately define The Claudia Quintet. The task is, however, for the most part, futile. Sure, the group sound and compositions are a unique combination—a dash of jazz, a smidgen of rock, some improv, a touch of non-western sources, or a little chamber. Ultimately, though, all that matters in the end is that this combination simply works. For those unaware of its membership, the group consists of Hollenbeck and bassist Drew Gress, vibraphonist Matt Moran, accordionist Ted Reichman and reedist Chris Speed. The five craftsmen forge a sound that shifts constantly in an unpredictable fashion, perhaps evoking a groove at one moment, soaring into the heights at another, exploring forlorn introspection the next or tackling a swirling sound collage of both prickly and boisterous terrains—sometimes using all of these elements within the context of one composition." Jay Collins, onefinalnote.com

“Whatever it is, Mr. Hollenbeck has gotten at a special group sound, and he's such a sensitive, technically deft drummer — you notice the steadiness of his timekeeping right away — that his music can just be what he wants it to be; it's curious, and sometimes lightly funny without sour, satiric edges. It doesn't need alignments with jazz or rock or anything else to vindicate itself." Ben Ratliff, New York Times 8:30PM Cover $10 www.johnhollenbeck.com

Upcoming Shows at Cornelia St. Cafe

Mon Sep 26 21 CENTURY SCHIZOID MUSIC PRESENTS SHAWN PERSINGER Shawn Persinger is Prester John (solo acoustic) and Prester John.

With a blend of rock, funk, and the avant-garde, New Haven, CT trio PRESTER JOHN has a sound that is uniquely its own. Formed by underground guitar-hero Shawn Persinger, Prester John also showcases the talents of drummer Steve Zieminski and bassist Joe Casillo.

Taylor Guitars' Wood and Steel once wrote, “Persinger has defined his career by playing hard-to-define music." Nothing could be closer to the truth. One minute you're hearing a pop song the next you're listening to music that could have been composed by Stravinsky. With the frantic juxtapositions of dozens of different styles Persinger insists PRESTER JOHN is simply a rock and roll band.

“Rock is one of the few styles that isn't idiomatic. A genre that includes The Beatles, Sabbath and Zappa obviously has layers to it. I'm happy to call Prester John 'rock and roll' we just have a few more twists than most groups."

“If, to paraphrase F. Scott Fitzgerald, the mark of a great artist is being able to keep two contradictory notions in mind and still function, then Persinger's musical abilities know few bounds." - Gramophone (Aug. 2004) 8:30PM Cover $10 www.persingermusic.com/
