Julian Priester Honored at Seattle's Recording Academy Honors 2005

THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST CHAPTER OF THE RECORDING ACADEMY PRESENTS: THE RECORDING ACADEMY HONORS™ 2005 SALUTING KATE BECKER, THE KINGSMEN, JULIAN PRIESTER AND SUB POP RECORDS Proceeds from the Pacific Northwest Awards Gala on September 24, to Benefit the Chapter's Professional Arts Education Programs SEATTLE, WA — Local music advocate Kate Becker, seminal garage band The Kingsmen, world-renowned jazz musician and educator Julian Priester, and legendary record label Sub Pop Records are the recipients of the 2005 Recording Academy Honors™ Award presented by the Pacific Northwest Chapter (PNW) of The Recording Academy®. The award is the highest honor bestowed by a Chapter and acknowledges those whose outstanding achievements and contributions have significantly enriched the music community and the community at large. The gala event, which attracts recording artists, key entertainment executives and community leaders, will be held at the Westin Hotel in Seattle on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005. Recipients of the award are selected in recognition of the excellence and integrity embodied in their work, as well as their willingness to support and participate in programs benefiting the music community. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a VIP reception including a special silent auction followed by an awards dinner and celebration, which will feature video tributes and performances by The Kingsmen and Julian Priester. A night the Seattle Post-Intelligencer has called “the most stylish and well-produced music awards gala in local history," The Recording Academy Honors event will raise funds that enable the PNW Chapter to provide ongoing music advocacy, education and professional development programs for recording industry professionals and those who aspire to careers in music. ABOUT THE RECIPIENTS: The Kingsmen are often referred to as the grandfathers of rock and roll. They started out as a garage band in Portland, Oregon and grew to be one of the most popular rock bands in the country. Their rendition of the song “Louie Louie" reached the top of the charts and was almost adopted as the Washington state song. The song has since become the definitive garage band tune and a rock classic. Kate Becker has been an instrumental force in the all-ages music community. She was a part of Seattle Music and Youth Task Force, which mobilized the community and helped eliminate the highly restrictive Teen Dance Ordinance. Before joining the Task Force, she was the executive director at the Old Firehouse in Redmond, a successful teen center and all-ages music venue. She also co-founded and served as the program director for the Vera Project, another all-ages music venue and community resource center in Seattle. Currently, she commutes from her home in Los Angeles to serve as Vera's interim executive director. Julian Priester, nationally renowned trombonist and educator, developed his craft and a love for jazz in his hometown Chicago. He has toured with a wide range of jazz legends including Lionel Hampton, Sun Ra, Max Roach, Duke Ellington, and Herbie Hancock and is currently a faculty member of Cornish College for the Arts where he teaches jazz composition, improvisation, performance, and history. He continues to compose and perform music. Sub Pop Records is one of the country's most renowned indie record labels. Sub Pop became a household name in the music world during the grunge movement of the 1990s. By releasing the records of Nirvana and Soundgarden, Sub Pop helped inspire a musical renaissance and established Seattle as the epicenter of '90s rock. Sub Pop has continued its tradition of putting out great music, and has released records from a myriad of talented bands that include The Shins, Sleater-Kinney, and the Postal Service.
