Continuum—A Journey Through Jazz
Episode 24: “New Jazz, Straight Ahead (Part 2)"

Hosted & Produced by J. Scott Fugate, “The Jazz Evangelist"

As it has been with the past 23 episode (which are still available on the soulandjazz.com website, by the way) the show is absolutely free, completely legal, fun for the whole family, and available to listen to anytime, anywhere, ad infinitum.

The week before last, I did an episode featuring some of the latest and greatest straight ahead / mainstream jazz released over recent months—but since there is so much good music being released this year, I have to do it again . . . with more to come!

This episode begins with the #1 artist currently on the Jazz Week charts for Jazz radio: Tamir Hendelman. We follow that with an album that hasn't been out long enough to hit the charts yet, the new live CD from the SFJAZZ Collective. You'll also hear from Christian Howes—a Jazz violinist with a unique sound and a contemporary spin on mainstream jazz—joined by guitarist Robben Ford.

There are also new CD's by some of the legends of jazz—such as a group called The Cookers, consisting of hard bop icons such as Billy Harper, Eddie Henderson, David Weiss, Craig Handy, George Cables, Cecil McBee and Billy Hart. The legendary trombonist Curtis Fuller also has a wonderful new CD from which we will sample.

Israeli guitarist Yotam joins up with Christian McBride & Roy Hargrove for some Soul Jazz; trombonist Conrad Herwig explores the Latin Side of Herbie Hancock with Randy Brecker, and then trombonist Michael Dease explores a Randy Brecker composition with Cyrus Chestnut, Sharel Cassity and others . . . and we end with some original vocal Jazz delivered with passion and soul by Gregory Porter.

It gives me hope and joy to see so much new, great, original Jazz currently being released! Who dat says jazz is dead? This episode will prove them wrong. Several of these songs may sound modern & progressive—but they all fall within the structure of straight ahead or mainstream jazz. Join me in the celebration of these new CDs and enjoy the ride!

I always love your comments and suggestions, so keep them coming to [email protected] . . . and also come join the conversation on Facebook & Twitter by searching for “The Jazz Evangelist" & “Soulandjazz.com"
