There is probably no one more qualified to evaluate pianists than bassist Eddie Gomez who has become a legend through his historic contribution to pianists such as Bill Evans and Chick Corea. On July 15, 16 and 17 at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York, Eddie Gomez together with pianist Mark Kramer will present three “next generation pianists”, TWINZ recording artists Werner “Vana” Gierig, Fernando Otero and Andy Ezrin. With the formidable Mr. Gene Jackson on the drums, each pianist will perform one of the three sets on Friday and Saturday, with a surprise set up on Sunday.
Legendary bassist EDDIE GOMEZ has been on the cutting edge of the jazz scene since his debut in mid sixties. His impressive resume includes performances with Jazz giants such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Evans, Gerry Mulligan, Benny Goodman, and Chick Corea. Eddie Gomez's unique sound and style can be heard on hundreds of recordings spanning the worlds of jazz, classical, Latin jazz, folk, and popular music.
Eddie Gómez was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He immigrated to New York with his family at an early age. His love of music led him to the double bass as a precocious eleven-year old student in the New York City public school system. Two years later he was accepted to the High School of Music and Art and soon after began his studies with the great double bass teacher Fred Zimmerman. During his High School years Eddie performed with many professional dance bands and was also a member of the Newport Youth Band led by Marshall Brown. By the age of eighteen Eddie Gómez had performed with such jazz luminaries as Benny Goodman, Buck Clayton, Marian McPartland, and Paul Bley.
Although his first love was jazz music, he continued his studies with Fred Zimmerman at the Juilliard School of Music. At the Juilliard School of Music his contemporaries were Chick Corea, Hubert Laws, James Levine, Itzak Perlman, Paula Robinson, and Gary Karr. By the end of his third year of school Eddie dreamed of having a career as a performing jazz musician. Later that summer he joined with Gary McFarland and soon after Gerry Mulligan’s small group. It was in the spring of 1966 that Eddie would perform with Mulligan’s group at the Village Vanguard. That week at the Village Vanguard changed Eddie’s life. When Bill Evans heard the young phenom, he practically hired him on the spot. Bill called a few weeks later and Eddie Gómez’s dream had been realized. At age 21, Eddie Gómez was the bassist with the Bill Evans Trio.
Joining Bill Evans Trio was indeed a turning point in Eddie Gomez's career. Eddie had arrived in a big way and the jazz community took notice. Shortly after the release of Bill Evans Trio first recording with Eddie, Time magazine lauded: Eddie Gomez has the world on his strings". Eddie Gomez would spend a total of eleven years with Bill's Trio as an integral component of its sound and evolution. This period of vast artistic growth with Bill Evans included performances throughout the United States, Europe, and the Orient, as well as dozens of recordings. Two of the Trio's recordings won Grammy awards. Eddie Gómez also realized another dream when in the late 60's performed on many occasions with his other idol Miles Davis, in the quintet that featured Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Tony Williams.
In 1977 Eddie Gomez left the Evans Trio to explore new musical territory. Throughout the seventies and into the 1980's Eddie performed in many diverse musical contexts. Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, George Benson, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Hank Jones, Nancy Wilson, Tania María, Ray Barreto, All Star groups Steps Ahead" and New Directions" to name just a few. In the classical music world Eddie Gomez has also been a guest artist with the Tashi Ensemble, The Kronos Quartet, and clarinetist Richard Stoltzman. Eddie also premiered a musical piece specifically written for him by William Thomas McKinley at Carnegie Recital Hall. Eddie Gomez has also crossed into the popular world of music. He has performed and or recorded with Bobby Darin, Carly Simon, Art Garfunkel, Mark Knopffler, Michael Franks, and Tim Hardin.
Eddie Gomez enjoys an active career as performer, recording artist, composer and educator. He records and concretizes extensively worldwide and composes for his own projects as well as for film. As an educator Mr. Gómez has given master classes at many of the major universities throughout the United States and Europe. Together with his friend, Telarc recording pianist Mark Kramer, Eddie Gomez recorded the highly acclaimed Jazz Fiddler on the Roof" album on the TWINZ label which Fiddler composer Jerry Bock called From Prelude to Postscript it was an ongoing revelation of invention, emotional insight and musicianship beyond measure". Highlights from a recent tour entitled “Live in Japan” as well as a duo album with pianist Carli Munoz Both Sides Now" are about to be released by TWINZ this summer.
Werner Vana" Gierig

Vana's current album, the critically acclaimed CD, A New Day (Twinz)," which charted for months in the top of the Jazz radio charts, integrates classic jazz trio with Brazilian percussion.
Vana is the recipient of numerous prestigious composition and performance awards, most recently winning the National Performance Activity Award from SESAC, the performing rights organization.
Besides his work as a leader, Vana is probably best known for his work as co-producer, artistic musical director, pianist and a composer on Regina Carter's #1 album entitled “Paganini: After a Dream”. As executive producer, Vana was deeply involved in the vision and realization of the idea for Regina to become the first non-classical musician to be allowed to perform on Paganini's world-famous violin.
The prestigious Wharton Center for the Performing Arts has commissioned Vana twice to write and premier extended works.
Vana was also solicited by HBO's Sex & the City" to compose the solo piano piece that accompanied Sarah Jessica Parker’s and Mikhail Baryshnikov’s first romantic encounter for the show’s season finale.
Otero's a seriously talented pianist, and his orchestrations are equal parts Bernard Herrmann and Charlie Parker. (That is, they alternate between jagged suspenseful crescendos and long, sinuous melodies.) This music bounds out of the speakers and leaps into every corner of the room at once, exhilarating but also bewildering - it's not tango, jazz, or classical, but some brand-new combination of all three.

Fernando Otero's music is unmistakably bonded to the expressive language of Buenos Aires. By drawing on the melancholic sensuality of the tango tradition and combining it with classical and jazz elements, Otero has created his own unique musical style that has not only mesmerized audiences all over the world but also has established him as one of the most outstanding musicians of his time. His latest CD PLAN" (TWINZ) features some astounding orchestral pieces and has been called Otero's finest work to date.
Fernando Otero was born in Buenos Aires, into a family of musicians. He received his first singing and piano lessons from his mother, Elsa Marval, a renowned opera singer and pianist. Since early childhood he has studied piano, harmony and composition which prepared him for his later master classes in orchestration and conducting. The inspiring environment of his upbringing allowed Otero to absorb diverse musical styles such as the traditional tango, local folklore, classical music, and Jazz.
By combining elements of the popular music of his nation with improvisational jazz solos and classic piano cadenzas woven together by traditional as well as contemporary composition techniques, Fernando arrived at his own unique style. It is a style that generates moods and taps into the increasing appetite of sophisticated audiences for a new authentic sound.
It therefore comes as no surprise that he was commissioned for original works by the Orpheus Orchestra, the Ahn Trio, the American Symphony, the San Francisco Camerata, the Red Ensemble, Orion Winds and concert pianist Julia Dusman. His performance schedule has taken him to more than thirty countries and allowed him to excite audiences in some of the most prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Town Hall and the Glenn Gould Studio.
Never satisfied with making a standards record for its own sake, Andy opens up classic jazz forms as a means of exploring their harmonic and rhythmic possibilities. From an arrangement standpoint, Andy capitalizes on the open canvas of swinging grooves, layed down by the finest of New York's jazz elite. What is skillfully brushed onto these canvases are Andy's lyrical melodies, his ever-shifting harmonies, always with an infusion of soulfulness.

Andy is about to release his new jazz organ trio recording entitled 'ZOOM' on the TWINZ label with Marcello Pelliteri on drums and Jean-Baptiste Bocle on vibes. The CD which was produced by vocalist and composer Peter Eldridge from the Grammy award winning group NY Voices, also features Bill Stewart, Larry Grenadier, and Lewis Nash.
While being trained as a classical pianist, Andy started improvising and playing jazz at the age of twelve, drawing from his father's record collection which included the music of Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock, and Stevie Wonder. His love for both classical and jazz led him to perform Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with his high school orchestra.
After completing the renowned Jazz Program of the University of Miami, Andy was a finalist in the Great American Jazz Piano Competition at the Jacksonville Jazz Festival. Soon after that he got hired by the Grammy award winning vocal jazz group New York Voices with whom he toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States. He recorded on four of their recordings, contributing to the title track of their 1993 CD, What's Inside" (GRP/MCA).
Since moving to New York City in 1992, Andy Ezrin has been a very busy pianist/ keyboardist, composer and session sideman. He has recorded with the likes of, Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker, Dr. John, Ron Carter, Lewis Nash, Eddie Gomez and the Grammy award winning New York Voices (contributing the title track of their ’93 release ‘What’s Inside’). He has also recorded and toured extensively with pop artists Joe Jackson and Rickee Lee Jones. He has performed in major festivals throughout the States, Europe, Asia and South America sharing the stage performing alongside Bobby McFerrin, George Benson, Paquito D'Rivera, Grover Washington and Les McCann.
As a composer, Andy has written music for television and film, including several shorts for 'Sesame Street,' and the long running cartoon, Courage the Cowardly Dog." Along with 'Courage' collaborator Jody Gray, Andy has co-written cues for the Scholastic feature film 'Clifford the Big Red Dog' as well as music for Miramax and HBO.
As a jazz pianist, Andy has several trio recordings, one in the US and eleven in Japan, as well as one solo project entitled 'Silent Movies' featuring his original material. He has also just completed a solo piano Christmas album to be released later this fall on BCI/Eclipse.
