The newest CD from veteran jazz pianist Billy Lester (Four Into Four, Coppens) has garnered much critical acclaim since its release, including most recently being selected as one of the Cadence Magazine Editor's Choices of 2003 for best recording of the year.

From the school of the legendary Lennie Tristano, the mid-50 year old Lester actually studied under one of Tristano's most acclaimed students, Sal Mosca. Having spent most of his time constructing his musical concept with only occasional performances, Lester has performed at Roulette in New York City (from which his most recent recording), as well as Cobi’s Place, and regularly he can be heard at Orbit in Harlem.

A masterful solo, duo, and trio pianist, I’m sure that after a listen, you will agree that Billy Lester has been a hidden treasure for most ears over these many years. In Alan Jones’ liner notes to Anthony Braxton’s Ten Compositions (Quartet) 2000 (CIMP), Lester is actually named an “unsung giant” composer along with Andrew Hill, whose compositions Braxton recorded. ______________________________________________________________________________

Lester is remarkably capable of refashioning ultra-familiar repertoire into music strikingly his own. -Howard Mandel, Jazz Journalist Association (JJA) president and jazz critic

The Tristano-ite approach of disguised chord sequences, plain-speaking rhythm sections and labyrinthine investigations of a particular structure has become integral within his style…A very interesting discovery. -Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD by Richard Cook/Brian Morton

…music with real character, spiky and tangential in a period when more and more jazz piano sounds like background music…There’s growing interest in purer bop piano styles, and Billy Lester deserves a listen. -Cadence Magazine

Artists newly discovered by me who possess the talent and technique to impress immediately are a definite plus to this business of writing. Lester falls into this category… (he) warrants attention through his divergent approach to the instrument…I look forward to hearing more. -Frank Rubolino

His writing style turns a jazz standard, through chord manipulation and inversion, into new music with fresh improvisations and harmonies. Lester’s inventive stylings…shows that Four can go into Four innumerable ways. -Elliott Simon, AllAboutJazz-New York ________________________________________________________________________________________________ For bookings, pictures, or more information, please contact: Laurence Donohue-Greene PH: 212-568-9628/email: [email protected]
