"Jazz Vocalese" George V Johnson Jr. Appears @ Blues Alley Wednesday, May 23, 2001

After one of the most memorable performances at this years East Coast Jazz Festival, Washington DC.s native son George V. Johnson, Jr., brings his group, “YOUR MAJESTY", to Blues Alley for a special one night engagement. This talented vocalist/lyricist/actor got his first start singing with the late pianist John Malachi during the 70's Jazz Workshops at the famous “PIGFOOT" Jazz Club owned and operated by Bill & Fannie Harris. This lead to performances with many jazz greats including stints with James Moody, Lou Donaldson, Larry Ridley & Jazz Legacy Ensemble, George Coleman, Clifford Jordan, Harold Vick, Barry Harris Jazz Vocal Ensemble and many more. He was also under the tutelage of the late Eddie Jefferson, “God Father of Vocalese". Jefferson can be heard passing the torch, proclaiming George V. Johnson,Jr. as “NEXT IN LINE" on the opening sound bite of his Next In Line CD. Also, an accomplisehed actor, he premiered and toured Europe in 1979 with the Broadway Musical “Raisin". Johnson first gained worldwide attention for his work with Pharoah Sanders on the 1980 recording REJOICE!, with an all-star ensemble consisting of John Hicks, Bobby Hutcherson, Steve Turre, Danny Moore, Dr. Art Davis & Billy Higgins. He was featured vocalist and penned the lyric to John Coltrane's classic “Moments Notice" on Theresa Records now Evidence Records. The Blues Alley concert will highlight original songs & Lyrics to improvised solo's of Parker, Dizzy, Miles, Trane, Moody, “Fat Head" Newman, Hank Mobley, Rollins, Clifford Brown, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young and more. George was nominated “Best Jazz Artist" at the 10th Annual LA Music Awards 2000 for his CD “Next In Line", which features outstanding solo's from saxophonist Arnold Sterling, pianist Bernard Samuel and the late Herman Foster. Eric Brace, writer for the Washington Post, describes George in a recent interview as one of the “Premiere Practitioners of Jazz Vocalization". The rhythm section will included Arnold Sterling, Raymond Angry, James King, Steve Williams and the newest additions to the group 19 year old trombone “Sensation" Herm Hopkins and Alto Saxophonist “FRED FOSS".
