The CD is out! Spiral by the Dave Wilson Quartet, featuring Dave on tenor and soprano saxophones, was released officially on June 15th, courtesy of Summit Records, a nationally based label, located in Phoenix, Arizona. This features 6 original compositions in a contemporary mode including “Spiral," “Ocean Blue," “Movin' On," “Remembering," “Summer Breezes," and “Like GS 2"; plus unique arrangements of three contemporary pop classics including “Friend of the Devil" by the psychedelic jam band icons the Grateful Dead; “(You're the) Biggest Part of Me" by the L.A. 70's studio sensation Ambrosia; and “My Own Prison" by the Alt Christian superstar rock band Creed; topped off by a lyrical and moving take on Tonhino Horta's beautiful jazz waltz, “Francisca" and a soaring rendition of pianist Richie Bierach's epic “Elm." Recorded at the famed Red Rock Studios, Saylorsburg, PA, Kent Heckman engineering, Dave enlisted the help of Phil Markowitz on Piano, Tony Marino on Bass, and Adam Nussbaum on Drums, all internationally acclaimed and renowned.

Asked why he chose these tunes to record Dave said, “These songs, including the original compositions and the “cover" tunes, are all, for various reasons, close to my heart. They are like personal statements of where I am at in my life, musically and otherwise. When I make and play music like this I am trying to communicate such heartfelt sentiments to the listener, whether they are in the club, the concert hall, or listening to the recording."

Spiral has received radio airplay from some 30 stations nationwide along with positive critical reviews. In its 4th week of airplay it has already achieved “Chartbound" status in the Jazz Weekly countdown, ranking #54 nationwide, as well as #41 in the “Roots" (Radio) report. Watch for Dave's in-studio interview with DJ Jeff Duperon on WRTI-FM, Philadelphia's leading jazz station on Friday, July 23rd, beginning at 6:45. The momentum is growing daily!

[Call WRTI at 215-204-8900 (direct line to the studio) and request a cut off the record. Ask for cuts they are actively playing now such as “Ocean Blue," “Spiral," “Movin' On," “Elm," “Friend of the Devil."]

CD Review

By George Fendel

If might be said that Dave Wilson represents a new segment of jazz musicians who test the ears of the listener nearly exclusively through their own compositions. Wilson has roots in Coltrane, but I found his actual tenor sound to have earlier influences as well. While his compositions would never be described as avant-garde, they at times test your ability to determine a melody line. Some of his compositions were more reigned in than others, but overall, there's a very urban, brawny sound that he seems to favor. For this recording, Wilson enlisted some top echelon talent in Phil Markewitz, piano, Tony Martino, bass, and Adam Nussbaum, drums. If you're looking for Zoot, Ben or Getz, this won't be you entree, but if you like being inside the outside, these guys dig pretty deep. [ Continue... ]
