This year the 29th edition of Jazz Middelheim takes place from August 12th through August 15th in Park Den Brandt in Antwerp, Belgium. With Cassandra Wilson and the Archie Shepp Quartet with Special Guests Roswell Rudd & Leon Parker the last two names are added to the programme. Toots Thielemans comes to Jazz Middelheim with his Quartet. Earlier the festival announced artists like Wayne Shorter Quartet, Ahmad Jamal, McCoy Tyner Trio feat. Joe Lovano, Dave Holland Flamenco Project for the 2010 edition.

August 12th showcases tenor saxophone player Archie Shepp and his Quartet, replacing Hank Jones who recently passed away. For the occasion Achie Shepp brings along Roswell Rudd & Leon Parker as guests. Saxophone player, composer and vocalist Archie Shepp was one of the loudest voices in the radical sixties. He first appeared alongside John Coltrane. As one of the main exponents of 'The New Thing', at the end of the sixties he seized his chance to work with a new and dynamic generation of musicians. Besides the colourful percussionist Leon Parker, Archie Shepp also brings along another old companion in arms as special guest, Roswell Rudd. Rudd had collaborated with Archie Shepp in 1964 for his first album for the Impulse label 'Four For Trane'. Later that day, the programme spotlights Facing East, the Coltrane project of Jos James and Jef Neve. Pianist McCoy Tyner is the main performer with Joe Lovano as a special guest.

On Friday August 13 the Wayne Shorter Quartet is the closing act of the day. They will be preceded by Ahmad Jamal and the Jeroen Van Herzeele Quartet.Toots Thielemans, the artistic godfather of the festival, is the headliner for Saturday August 14th. He takes to the Jazz Middelheim stage with Hein Van de Geyn, Karel Boehlee and Hans Van Oosterhout, who had played in place of Danilo Perez at last year's edition due to Danilo's injury. In the meantime the repertoire has been finalized. Soon Toots will release a live album with this same quartet. The Conservatory project Le Pragmatisme du Barman feat. Peter Evans is the First act of the day before Aka Moon + Baba Sissoko & Black Machine and World Saxophone Quartet +M'BOOM. Cassandra Wilson, back in Belgium after quite a while, has the honour of closing this 29th edition of Jazz Middelheim. During the last 20 years she became one of the leading jazz divas, although she also sings blues songs or pop songs as well now and then. Her main weapon is her moving, smokey, shady voice. In that voice you will always find a link to her roots, the musical soil of the Mississippi delta. For this concert Cassandra Wilson arrives at Park Den Brandt with the line-up that she recorded one of her recent albums, 'Loverly' with. In the near future she will release a brand new album with this group: Reginald Veal (bass), Marvin Sewell (guitar), Jonathan Batiste (piano & keyboards), Lekan Babalola (percussion) and Herlin Riley (drums). Cassandra Wilson will only play 2 concerts this summer while in Europe, one of them at Jazz Middelheim, a premiere of her new album. Earlier on the closing day of the festival there are the Chris Joris Experience, Dave Holland Flamenco Project and pianist Chucho Valds.

After every concert evening there will be jam sessions, organized in collaboration with the Antwerp Conservatory. These jams will be led by the Christophe Erbstsser Trio, who also teaches at the Antwerp Conservatory, and with students and possibly also artists performing at Jazz Middelheim. This begins every festival evening at 11 o'clock at Zuiderpershuis, Waalse Kaai, Antwerp. Free entrance.
