On April 19, 2005, Average White Band releases Greatest & Latest, a 16-song compilation of the legendary funk & soul group's finest songs from the past 15 years via Liquid 8 Records. Included is a special bonus DVD loaded with interviews and live footage.
“It's the best material documenting the second phase of our career," says lead singer and bass guitarist Alan Gorrie who reformed the group in 1988 with original members Onnie McIntyre, Roger Ball and new recruit, multi-instrumentalist Eliot Lewis.
Best known for the chart-topping “Pick Up The Pieces” from the number one album AWB, the band recorded four albums between 1989 and 2003. Highlighting the best from these, Greatest & Latest also includes Nu Jazz Mix re-recordings of “Pick Up The Pieces” and “Work To Do” (the new single) as well as previously unreleased live versions of “In The Beginning” from the 2003 Mount Fuji Jazz Festival and “Let's Go Round Again” recorded in 1998 at the London Empire.
The 1989 album Aftershock produced “The Spirit Of Love,” “Let's Go All The Way,” “I'll Get Over You” and “Love At First Sight,” featuring guest performances by Chaka Khan, saxophonist Ronnie Laws, the Ohio Players and former Santana vocalist Alex Ligertwood.
Klyde Jones made his AWB debut on 1995’s Soul Tattoo singing lead on the single “Every Beat Of My Heart.” Daryl Hall guests on “I Wanna Be Loved.” The late Bobby Mayo, keyboardist/guitarist with Peter Frampton, also contributes on “Window To Your Soul” and “Do Ya Really.” The album also introduced drummer Pete Abbott.
Face To Face was recorded live at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco in 1997 and unleashes saxophonist Fred (Freddy V) Vigdor on “Oh Maceo.”
With Jones and drummer Brian Dunne signed on as permanent members, 2003's Living In Colour features the title track and “Love Won't Let Me Wait.”
AWB’s influence is profound. To date, the band has been sampled over 200 times and counting. A cover version of “Pick Up The Pieces” by Kenny G and David Sanborn is currently enjoying considerable airplay on smooth-jazz radio. The success of The Rock 'N' Soul 2004 Revue tour, when AWB teamed up with Hall & Oates and Michael McDonald, is testament to the band’s reputation as one of the most exciting live attractions around.
