The upstairs room at the Hudson House Restaurant of Nyack is a perfect jazz room, and trombonist Matt Haviland has assembled a stellar quartet--with Mike Holober (piano), Cameron Brown (bass), and Tony Jefferson (drums)--to take advantage of it. They bring top-level jazz every Wednesday night to this village on the Hudson River just north of New York City, known for it's unique character and connection with music and the arts.
“There are so many world-class musicians living in this area, and Nyack is the perfect place for this kind of venue," Haviland states. “We're trying to provide a place where the musicians can feel at home--can stop by, hang out, and sit in--and where people from all over the area can come enjoy great music and good food without having to go to New York." “In addition to featuring the notable individual and collective talents of the quartet, Jazz Upstairs features a guest artist the first Wednesday of every month, to date including Scott Wendholt in March, and John Hart on April 6.

A fixture on the New York music scene for the last 20 years, guitarist John Hart has distinguished himself both as a recording artist, bandleader, and sideman. Known for his longtime tenure with Hammond B3 organ master Jack McDuff, John has also worked with cutting edge and rising young stars such as Brian Blade, Larry Goldings, Chris Potter and Javon Jackson. John is a composer of merit with 5 CDs as a leader for prestigious labels Blue Note and Concord. Add this to the 60 some CDs he has appeared on as a sideman, performances at many of the major jazz festivals and clubs internationally, television appearances and radio shows, and it’s obvious to see why John Hart has become a familiar name with jazz fans worldwide. Recently, John has formed a new trio which has just released its second CD for Hep records, Indivisible, released in November 2004.

Trombonist Matt Haviland has been in demand as a performer and featured soloist with some of the top names in jazz, and has built a reputation as a gifted composer and arranger, since arriving in New York in the early 1980s. Performance credits include jazz festival and club appearances across Europe, Scandinavia, Japan, the Caribbean, and the U.S. with the Illinois Jacquet Big Band, Bobby Watson Big Band, Deodato, and Blood Sweat & Tears, as well as with his own quartet and quintet. Other freelance work has included the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Maria Schneider, Mingus Big Band, Slide Hampton’s World of Trombones, Brother Jack McDuff, and a featured solo on the Broadway stage in Swing. Haviland can be heard on CDs by Charli Persip, Jackie & Roy, and Bill Warfield, among others, and his writing has been featured on recordings by the Harper Brothers, Persip, and Diane Moser's Composers Big Band.
