Led by NYJA program director and saxophonist Javier Arau, New York Jazz Academy's talented and experienced faculty will provide the instruction for the program and will appear in concert and clinic formats throughout the week. Select days of ensemble rehearsals will include professional rhythm section players. New York Jazz Academy features many of the finest jazz musicians and educators in New York City. Previous summer workshop guest artists have included legendary trumpeter and pianist Chris Rogers, trombonist Mike Fahie, bassist and composer Ike Sturm, and drummer Jared Schonig.
NYJA Summer Jazz Workshops emphasize practical playing experience through a variety of classes, clinics, and performance activities for today's jazz musician. All participants will be placed in performance ensembles that stress a combination of reading music, improvising and collaborative music-making. Participants will leave the workshop with a significantly greater understanding of harmony, melody, and jazz styles.
Classes, lessons, clinics, ensembles and masterclasses comprise the week's events. Most mornings involve warm-up techniques, improvisation seminars, and jazz styles classes. Afternoons are comprised of ensemble rehearsals, performance workshops, and guest artist masterclasses.
