"HIGHLIGHTS IN JAZZ" PRESENTS

Thursday, February 10, 2005 8PM Highlights In Jazz 32nd Anniversary featuring The Heath Brothers and Kevin Mahogany

February 7, 2005 Jack Kleinsinger's “Highlights in Jazz," New York's longest running jazz series is pleased to present The Heath Brothers and Kevin Mahogany February 10, 2005 at 8 PM.

This will be Highlights In Jazz 32nd Anniversary concert. “Highlights in Jazz" Series founder and producer, Jack Kleinsinger, is passionate about presenting jazz and for the past three decades has presented a veritable jazz hall of fame. Cab Calloway, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, McCoy Tyner, Earl Hines, Louis Bellson, Buddy Rich, Kenny Burrell and scores of others have participated as either headliners or surprise guests, making “Highlights" NYC's longest running jazz concert series.

To kick off the 32nd series what better way then the fabulous Heath Brothers. This group is composed of one of jazz's most prolific musical brothers teams in jazz, Jimmy, Percy and Tootie Heath. Contemplating the family legacy, middle brother Jimmy, 77, the one who writes, arranges and plays saxophones, remarks, “we're lucky enough that all of us are still here. Between us, we've got over 150 years of experience and we are the elders of the surviving families of this music." Brother Percy, 81, a bassist of considerable renown, is the senior brother. Albert “Tootie," the LA based drummer, is the baby of the group at 69. “Some baby," his middle brother wryly observes. Although Jimmy and Percy gigged together in and around their Philadelphia home in the 40s, most notably with Dizzy Gillespie, it wasn't until Jimmy's Riverside recordings in the late 50s that the three brothers had a chance to really play together. “By that time," Jimmy recalls, “Percy was out all the time with the Modern Jazz Quartet and Tootie was working with J.J. Johnson and Bobby Timmons."

The Heath Brothers play first-rate bop-based small-combo jazz. Individually they appear on hundreds of legendary recordings and collectively have recorded for Columbia and Concord Jazz. Brother Percy just released a new CD, A Love Song from Daddy Jazz.

Vocalist Kevin Mahogany (b. 1958) blends jazz, pop and R&B styles effortlessly into an accessible mix that is both commercial and musical. The Kansas City native received his greatest recognition as an actor portraying a singer patterned after Big Joe Turner in Robert Altman’s film Kansas City, but he was ready for the exposure after recording several impressive albums for Enja and Warner Bros. NewsWeek, described him as “the standout jazz vocalist of his generation." Esteemed writer Whitney Balliet declared in The New Yorker, “There is little Mahogany cannot do," while the L.A. Times pronounced Mahogany to be “one of the first truly gifted male vocalists to emerge in years." His latest CD, Kevin Mahogany Big Band, will be released January 25, 2005 from Zebra/Mahogany Jazz/Lightyear.

There will be a special surprise guest on this show.
