World renowned Jazz violinist Regina Carter is gearing up to release her newest album, Reverse Thread, with a tour throughout the United States.

For Reverse Thread, Regina collected African folk music from a variety of sources and infused it with her own contemporary twist while remaining true to the musics' origins.

Regina added the kora, a West African harp traditionally played by village storytellers, and the accordion to her long-standing band. The result is uplifting and stirring music, which celebrates and honors traditional African folk music and the spirit of passing story from generation to generation. Two tracks from the album ("Hiwumbe Awumba" and “Mwana Talitambula") are based on field recordings of Ugandan Jews, which through Regina's arrangements celebrate the resiliency of the human spirit.

Reverse Thread also embraces music of the African Diaspora. As but one example, “Un Aguinaldo" skillfully layers the rhythmic aspects of African music with harmonies originating in India and Puerto Rico.

Regina is one of the preeminent Jazz violinists of this generation. In 2001, Regina made history by becoming the first jazz artist and first African American to play Niccolo Paganini's famed Guarneri “Cannon" violin, which was built in 1743 for the classical music virtuoso and composer. Having flown to Genoa, Italy to play the violin for the first time, the violin was then flown to NYC for Regina to record her album, Paganini: After a Dream. Regina recently returned to her hometown of Detroit to premiere a neo-classical violin concerto commissioned specifically for her by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and written by eminent composer and pianist Billy Childs. In addition to the Reverse Thread tour, Regina is currently also part of the Monterey Jazz Festival All-Star Tour.
