Tuesday, March 9, 2010, three of Brooklyn's most inventive ensembles perform at Zebulon in Williamsburg for a night of explosive, original music. The three groups are bound by an aesthetic of 21st century composition infused with jazz-based improvisation: featuring overdriven electric guitars, squonking horns, pounding drums, and a ferocious and provocative live show, some call the sound DistortionJazz.

In order of appearance, the night will feature The Suite Unraveling, Gutbucket, and Afuche. Each group will perform a 50-minute set.

The Suite Unraveling is the brainchild of guitarist Lily Maase and has been described as “music that lives at the boundaries of jazz and progressive or art rock, being neither and both, with a message that is profoundly uplifting." (Budd Kopman, AllAboutJazz)

Collective quartet Gutbucket is in its 11th year of touring and recording, and released its fourth CD “A Modest Proposal" on the legendary Cuneiform Records in 2009. Having just toured across Europe and premiered at the 2010 Tel Aviv Jazz Festival in February (and dubbed “the best performance of the festival" by Ha'aretz) the band brings its road-tested best, with a bundle of new music that will soon comprise a fifth recording. Gutbucket has been called “New York's premier jazz/prog/punk band" with music that “blends free jazz, hardcore rock, oddball time signatures, and other elements into a cacophonous, humor-laden sound all its own" (Boston Globe).

Afuche is an Afro-Cuban Prog Noise Funk band from Brooklyn. More specifically, “...if Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart's acid lovechildren spent three days in a darkened room in the middle of the desert listening to Larks' Tongues in Aspic... It's experimental music that will make you dance your ass off while screaming." (Ryan Snow)
