From his cornerstone role on seminal pop, fusion and jazz recordings with everyone from Chaka Khan and Steely Dan to Chick Corea and Quincy Jones, to his invention of the 6-string contrabass guitar and revolutionary use of a flanger pedal on the O'Jays' smash, For the Love of Money," Anthony Jackson has long been the bassist's bassist.
About the only milestone missing from Jackson's remarkable career is a solo album. Until now. Via the proposal and pen of his good friend, celebrated Greek composer/bassist Yiorgos Fakanas, Anthony makes his disc debut with Interspirit, a potent amalgamation of contemporary chamber music and jazz, led by the duo's dynamic bassmanship.
Interspirit features Jackson indulging in two of his greatest gifts: utilizing a flatpick and multi tracks to fully interpret Fakanas's extremely challenging melodies, and providing improvised bass lines behind the soloists in his singular, inimitable style. Fakanas handles the bass solos and brilliantly shades his compositions to highlight his and Jackson's contrasting approaches to their instrument.
Joining them on the nine-track CD are such international heavyweights as drummer Dave Weckl, guitarist Frank Gambale, keyboardist Mitch Forman and saxophonist Tony Lakatos, as well as a horn section and string quintet. Interspirit's impact is immediate, while it's deep layers demand repeated listenings. Either way, spread the word: Anthony Jackson's solo statement has arrived!
