Sunday, November 14th at 5pm: Come hear a RARE solo concert by the master percussionist *This concert is hosted by AllAboutJazz-New York Managing Editor and HVG resident Laurence Donohue-Greene.

Kevin Norton plays vibraphone, marimba, drums, and percussion. He has performed internationally for more than two decades, released nearly a dozen recordings as leader, has appeared on over fifty sessions as a sideman, and is one of the most inventive and consistently musical drummer/percussionists performing today. He will perform originals in addition to works by Thelonious Monk, Anthony Braxton, and Steve Lacy.

Having played with many major improvisers and modern composers such as Braxton, Fred Frith, Mark Dresser and Fred Lonberg-Holm, Norton has in addition worked with such jazz and klezmer musicians as Slam Stewart and Andy Statman. He earned his bachelors degree from CUNY's Hunter College, and his masters from the Manhattan School of Music. Since then, he has received awards and grants from Meet the Composer and the NEA, among others, and has performed at new music and jazz festivals internationally. Norton has also composed for the varied settings he's performed in, such as the Framework ensemble, and his own quintet, as well as for duo and trio line-ups, sometimes with unspecified instrumentation. He has also composed for dance, and plays including The Plot, in 1992. His own ensemble's recording, Knots, released in 1999 on the Music & Arts label, includes renowned clarinetist David Krakauer. He has also performed and/or recorded with Milt Hinton, Erik Friedlander, the Klezmatics, Andy Statman, and many other New York-area musicians.

“One of the most valuable moving parts of downtown jazz." -The New York Times

“Kevin Norton continues to emerge as a stand-out of the avant-garde as both a drummer and as a composer." -Modern Drummer

“Norton's drumming is nothing short of remarkable. His command of phrase and nuance is impressive .... He plays the way one would expect a composer to play the drums, treating the instrument as an orchestra in itself." -Percussive Notes

“Norton's awareness of musical history is what makes him such an exciting player. He never sounds as if he is playing pastiche post-bop or New Thing, but it is always clear where his roots lie. It's an ancestry he has investigated with impressive thoroughness and genuine understanding." -Brian Morton (Jazz Review)
