CENTRAL BROOKLYN JAZZ CONSORTIUM PRESENTS 10th ANNUAL CENTRAL BROOKLYN JAZZ ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION CONCERT FEATURING Papo Vazquez PIRATES TOUBADOURS



Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium (CBJC) will host an early evening of great jazz by celebrating its 10th year of providing affordable cultural entertainment. This anniversary jubilee is open to all and will take place on Saturday, November 28th, 2009 at Jazz966 located at 966 Fulton Street in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn. The concert will feature performances by: Grammy nominated Papo Vazquez Pirates Troubadours, Central Brooklyn Jazz All Stars, and Boys and Girls High School Jazz Band. Trombonist and composer Papo Vazquez brings his Pirates Troubadours ensemble consisting of Willie Williams (sax), Zaccai Curtis (piano), John Benitez (bass), Anthony Carrillo (congas) and Victor Jones (drums). Papo's trombone style combines elements of Jazz, Afro-Caribbean rhythms to create his special blend of Latin Jazz. He is considered by many as one of the pioneers of Afro Puerto Rican Jazz which is a mix of Puerto Rican Bomba, Plena and Jibaro music. Papo recording, Marooned/Aislado, on his own label Picaro Records was nominated in 2008 for a Grammy. Mr. Vazquez has performed with jazz luminaries such as: Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Wayne Shorter, Eddie Palmieri, Frank Foster, Ray Barretto, and is an original member of the Fort Apache Band just to name some musical affiliations.



Central Brooklyn Jazz All Stars comprising of jazz greats and notable musicians residing in this borough are: Bob Cunningham (bass), Kiane Zawadi (trombone), Ahmed Abdullah (trumpet), George Gray (drums), Rudi Mwongozi (piano), and CBJC musical director Jeff King (saxophone). An all star band was created (1992) is to pay homage to Brooklyn Jazz Hall of Fame legends such as Max Roach, Betty Carter, Cal Massey, Freddie Hubbard and Dr. Randy Weston among others.



Boys and Girls High School Jazz Band, a 15 piece ensemble, is lead by music teacher, bassist Mattathias Person. This educational institution, lead by Principal Bernard Gassaway, has a long history as a training ground for future leaders from Brooklyns Bedford Stuyvesant community. The schools Entertainment, Visual Arts & Design Technology Academy, under the direction of Assistant Principal Catrina Williams, boasts one of the finest high school jazz bands in New York City. Mr. Person, a respected musician, played in the bands of Frank Foster, Jackie Mclean, Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, and a 10 year tour of duty with Rahsaan Roland Kirk to name a few.

Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium/CBJC founded in 1999, is an amalgam of patrons, entertainment venues, faith based and community organizations and musicians. Over the past ten (10) years CBJC has presented an annual spring festival, established a Brooklyn Jazz Hall of Fame & Museum (TM), and produced yearly programs that feature local jazz talent. CBJC is a nonprofit corporation committed to preserving, promoting and supporting live music within the under served communities of Brooklyn.
