The performers August 6 will include vocalist Tammy Scheffer, trumpeter and flugelhornist Vivek Patel, pianist Michel Reis, alto and soprano saxophonist Aaron Kruziki, bassist Greg Loughman, drummer Lee Fish and of course, guitarist and composer Nick Grondin.
Grondin presents his music as modern instrumental storytelling, inspired equally by rock, folk and contemporary jazz styles. Using a broad palette of sounds featuring voice, trumpet, saxophones, guitar, piano, bass and drums, he aspires to connect the listeners and performers through sharing a music that is rich on many intellectual and emotional levels.
Mixed among the diverse original compositions in their repertoire are also re- interpretations of songs by bands such as the Beatles and Radiohead.
Grondin’s new CD, SongTeller – The Jazz Orchestra Project, presents four new works for jazz orchestra, along with two pieces for ten-piece jazz ensemble that also feature Grondin on guitar. Four of the pieces have won national awards from Downbeat Magazine and The ASCAP/Gibson Guitar Young Jazz Composer Awards. Bright colors and sonic textures abound as Grondin animates the wide-ranging timbrel palette of the 18-piece jazz orchestra, with added harp, voice and percussion also illuminating the sonic journey.
“As in our favorite stories and films, musical works are moments of art experienced through time. A SongTeller is how I see my role as a composer, and on this recording, my desire was to share these musical stories told in melody,” says Nick.
