Bassist-Composer Charnett Moffett's "The Art of Improvisation" CD Out Today on Motema Music
"Moffett is a hypnotic performer. Playing the upright and the electric bass and accompanied only by piano and drums, he mesmerizes with a series of propulsive minimalist grooves..." --DETAILS
This spirited and soulful recording comes highly recommended, especially to those who tire of the less substantive, flashy, speed king quotient prevalent in far too many other bassists." --All Music Guide
Today, Charnett Moffett releases his 10th solo recording and Motma Music debut as a leader, The Art Of Improvisation. On The Art Of Improvisation, the innovative, multi-directional bassist and prolific composer showcases his extraordinary virtuosity on the upright bass--creating his own universe of singular sounds through innovative bowing techniques and electronic manipulation - while seamlessly switch hitting to fretless electric bass and electric piccolo bass, both of which he plays to beautiful melodic and rhythmic effect.
The bass is a machine and it has its limitations," Moffett states. Believe me, I've tried to get things out of it that the instrument won't give. I guess that's why I got into the whole effects thing, because I'm always reaching for something else."
On The Art of Improvisation, Moffett is joined by drummers Will Calhoun and Eric McPherson, keyboardist Scott Brown, guitarists Pat Jones and Shane Barnes and trumpeter RJ Avallone. Actress Angela Moffett stirringly recites the inspiring words of poet Langston Hughes on '"Dreams." Regarding the indelible hookup with his 20-year-old son Charnett Max, who plays drums on Dreams," Swing Rock" and The Star Spangled Banner," Moffett reveals, It's a real blast playing with him. It's just amazing how much his groove reminds me of my dad's (jazz drum legend, Charles Moffett)."
Moffett, a seasoned veteran who has released a string of superb outings as a leader, has toured and recorded with some of the greatest innovators in jazz--Ornette Coleman, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Art Blakey, Wynton Marsalis, Stanley Jordan and Pharoah Sanders, to name a few.
