The founding father of the European Free Jazz movement, German saxophonist Peter Brotzmann has made important contributions with Last Exit (with Bill Laswell, Sonny Sharrock and Ronald Shannon Jackson), Die Like a Dog (with William Parker, Hamid Drake and Toshinori Kondo) and his Chicago- and Scandinavian-based Tentet with Ken Vandermark. He returns to Philadelphia in duo with the exceptional drummer Nasheet Waits, best know for his work with Andrew Hill, the Fred Hersch Trio and Jason Moran's Bandwagon.

OffOnOff is one-half of the acclaimed Original Silence, also featuring Jim O'Rourke, Thurston Moore and Mats Gustafsson. The trio has been described as an amalgamation of Last Exit, James Blood Ulmer and Sonic Youth. Their rare performances are characterized by heavy grooves, intense free improvisation, noise, and rapid shifts and contrasts. OffOnOff features guitarist Terrie Ex, best known as a member of the Dutch rock group The Ex, and for his collaborations with Han Bennink, Ab Baars and Ken Vandermark; bassist Massimo Pupillo is a member of the Italian trio Zu which has collaborating with Lightning Bolt, Mike Patton, Mats Gustafsson and The Melvins' King Buzzo; and the exceptional drummer Paal Nilssen-Love, who performs regularly with The Thing, Peter Brotzmann Tentet and Atomic.

The Guardian describes AACM saxophonist Matana Roberts as an “an eloquent, dramatic tone-warping free-jazz artist, right out of Ayler's anti-bebop tradition." An expert improviser, Roberts' playing can be heard on recordings as disparate as Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Savath & Savalas, TV on the Radio, and Burnt Sugar. Among many others, she has collaborated with Fred Anderson, Tortoise's Jeff Parker and Roscoe Mitchell.
