Jazz drummer Walter Perkins is now home after being discharged from a hospital after receiving radiation treatments for lung cancer. Speculation has it that his illness is due to long term effects of second hand smoke exposure after performing in many smoke filled jazz clubs for many years. It is noted that Walter Perkins has not performed for five weeks now and has missed his regular stint at Carmichael's in Jamaica, Queens on Wednesday nights performing for the Creative Jazz Organization. Walter perkins can be heard on many jazz recordings -- and was a top notch jazz drummer during the 50's and 60's. Walter Perkins used to play with Charles I. Williams, alto sax, Henry H. Edmonds, piano, and Horace Parlan, many others. In 1968 Walter Perkins was working at the Pines Hotel in South Fallsburgh, New York with Hank Edmonds, Charlie I. Williams, Eddie Barnes, Vicki Barnes, and had a great group worthy of recognition they did not realize. For many years Walter Perkins, played at the Village Door Supper Club in Jamaica, Queens N.Y. with Hank Edmonds, Lloyd Buchanan on bass, Doug Gould or Count Staten on drums. -30- END
