New York, NY - Trumpeter/composer Gabriel Alegria is an artist that has developed a unique form of World Jazz that combines his singular, distinct approach to jazz combined with the rich heritage of Afro-Peruvian music. BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, in partnership with the Jazz Per Internacional, proudly presents Gabriel Alegria in concert with his Afro-Peruvian Sextet, Thursday, February 5 at 8:00 PM. The Afro Peruvian Sextet is Gabriel Alegria (trumpet, compositions and arrangements), Laurandrea Legua (saxophone), Yuri Jurez (acoustic guitar), Ramn De Bruyn (bass), Hugo Alczar (drums), and master percussionist Freddy “Huevito” Lobatn, who plays the traditional Afro- Peruvian instruments cajon (box drum) and quijada (jawbone), and adds spectacular passages of zapateo dancing (a flamenco-derived 2/4 folkloric tap dance) to each performance.

The concert in BMCC Tribeca PAC’s grand 900 seat theater, the highlight of Alegria’s North American Tour, will showcase music from Alegria’s debut CD Nuevo Mundo (Saponegro Records), which features The Afro Peruvian Sextet with special guest appearances by Bill Watrous, Bobby Shew, Russell Ferrante and Tierney Sutton. After a significant presence on North American Radio for more that five months and reaching the top of the Jazz Week World Music chart and the CMJ Jazz chart, the Afro-Peruvian Sextet sets sail for the U.S. from their native Per for this tour which visits Washington state, Washington D.C., North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Vermont, Rochester, New Mexico, and NYC.

One of the most influential figures on the current jazz scene in Per, Alegria was born into an artistic family in Lima in 1970. His grandfather Ciro was Per’s most famous novelist, and his father Alonso is Per’s most acclaimed playwright. During the course of a career that has spanned the globe, Alegria has performed and/or recorded with Maria Schneider, Placido Domingo, Kenny Werner, Ingrid Jensen, Tierney Sutton, Natalie Cole, The Peruvian National Symphony, Bill Watrous, Russell Ferrante, John Thomas, Alex Acuna and many others. Most recently Gabriel completed the groundbreaking “Tour Peru”, a new model in touring that included 40 fans accompanying the Afro-Peruvian Sextet throughout their Peruvian tour. He has also performed concerts for the United Nations and various diplomatic missions from around the world. His Afro-Peruvian Sextet has appeared in over 300 concerts and master classes throughout North America.

Alegria combines his experience of playing jazz with a passionate interest and careful study of the black music of coastal Per. By incorporating and exploring the common African roots found in both styles he has developed a uniquely Afro-Peruvian jazz concept. The rich legacy of the black music of coastal Per can be heard in a contemporary jazz context. In all of Alegria’s work, a cross-cultural exchange between the Americas is always present, carefully defining Afro-Peruvian jazz music as the newest voice to come from Latin America.

Currently Associate Director of Jazz Studies at New York University, Alegria earned a doctorate in jazz studies from the University of Southern California and a masters degree from the City University of New York. His commanding knowledge of Afro-Peruvian music is the result of extensive fieldwork and time spent in Per learning from the art form’s greatest exponents.

“a fascinating glimpse into how jazz is fusing with regional music around the world” --LA Weekly

“My life has been enriched by Gabriel’s vision and the great music he has introduced me to.” --Ingrid Jensen

“Incredible! We Americans sometimes have a bastardized idea of Latin music. It’s great to get this information straight from the source and presented the way it is supposed to be.” --Christian McBride

“Gabriel’s a wonderful trumpet player and composer creating a sound few people have heard. Very fresh!” --Maria Schneider
