Italian Cultural Institute – Monday, October 27 @ 7PM
686 Park Avenue (Between 68th and 69th Streets)

At the request of the Italian Cultural Institute, Enrico Pieranunzi will preview a few selections from his upcoming recording on CAM Jazz, “Pieranunzi Plays Domenico Scarlatti: Sonatas and Improvisations," the most important classical composer of the 18th century from Italy. Pieranunzi succeeds in doing something that’s never been done before: composing-by-improvising on the sonatas of the most original keyboard composer-improviser of the Baroque Age.

The evening provides an opportunity for Italians, jazz and music fans and the international creative community to welcome Pieranunzi to New York City prior to his four-night engagement at Birdland. This special event is produced by Enzo Capua. Sponsors are The Italian Cultural Institute and Alitalia Airlines.

Born in Rome in 1949, Enrico Pieranunzi has long been one of the best-known and appreciated personalities on the European jazz scene. Pianist, composer and arranger, he has recorded more than 60 CDs as a leader in all formations: solo, duo, trio, quartet and quintet. He has performed in concert and/or recorded with Chet Baker; Lee Konitz; Paul Motian; and Charlie Haden among others. In addition to recording many albums, he has originated more than 200 compositions including “Night Bird," recorded several times by Baker and performed by many others. Many of his compositions have become international standards.

Pieranunzi's formative years embraced both classical and jazz piano, and the influence of Debussy is readily apparent in the lush romanticism at the heart of his music. Emerging in the early '70s, Pieranunzi's lyrical approach quickly brought him to the forefront of the European scene.

He has been featured at the most important international festivals in the world from Montreal to Copenhagen, from Berlin to Madrid. In 1989 and 2003 he was voted Musician of the Year in the Musica Jazz critics’ poll. In 1997 he received the Django d'Or Award for Best European Jazz Musician. In 2004 he toured Japan with the American trio he formed in 1984, featuring bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron, the first of several outstanding groups he’s created with American musicians. In 2006 he toured the U.S., performing at New York City’s famous Birdland, and giving a solo piano recital at the San Francisco Jazz Festival.

Birdland Jazz Club – October 29 – November 1 @ 8PM & 10PM 315 W. 44th Street (Between 8th and 9th Avenues)

Pieranunzi returns to Birdland after his 2006 engagement to perform jazz with two very different ensembles. From October 29-30, he will lead a trio featuring Steve Swallow on bass and Paul Motian on drums. From October 31 to November 1, Pieranunzi will showcase his Latin Quintet featuring Diego Urcola on trumpet; Yosvany Terry on saxophone; John Patitucci on bass; and fellow CAM Jazz recording artist, Antonio Sanchez on drums.

All concerts are produced by Enzo Capua.
