Pianist Graeme Bell and his brother Roger formed their first jazz band, a four-piece group called the Portsea Four, in Melbourne in 1940. Yesterday, the Sydney-based Bell returned for what might be his last public appearance.
The occasion was a concert organised by Jazz Australia at the Bentleigh Club to mark Bell's 94th birthday with the launch of a complete compilation of all the tunes he has composed over his career.
