JVC Jazz Festival Presents Turntables & Samples Meet Jazz

Featuring Marco Benevento, DJ Logic & Mocean Worker on Tuesday, June 24 @ Le Poisson Rouge

MARCO BENEVENTO

“Benevento is actually a pop formalist, albeit a sneaky one, and, for all his improvisational chops, a textural minimalist very much in the tradition of Brian Eno or Sigur Ros. Chaos and chance are the calling cards, but his songs are always accessible." -- Village Voice

Marco Benevento has been blowing minds around the world for the past six years as one half of the critically-acclaimed post-jazz, instrumental rock luminaries, The Benevento-Russo Duo. From Austin City Limits to Bonnaroo, from The Fuji Rock Festival to Lollapalooza, Benevento's extra-terrestrial keyboard visions have earned him a legion of fans. While still touring frequently with The Duo, Benevento's also stepped out as a leader. Last year, he formed his own trio for a string of sold out U.S. shows. Soon thereafter, he entered the studio to document the songs he'd been performing. The results are captured on Invisible Baby--Benevento's critically-acclaimed debut studio album. The music runs from tasty Mellotron jams to distorted piano excursions, experiments with circuit bent toys like Speak & Spells and Casio keyboards to a spectrum of audio colors, including banjos, drum loops and Glockenspiels. Marco Benevento performs with his trio, featuring Reed Mathis (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) on bass and Andrew Barr (The Slip) on drums.

DJ LOGIC

“Logic's not just a skilled DJ, he's also a talented all-around musician. Eschewing flashy scratching displays, he fronts chunky hip-hop beat slinging, knob-twisting dub, and chaotic sound sculpting -- sonic trademarks that've made him the man to call when jazz cats want to tap into the hip-hop zeitgeist. The results - both on the album and in concert - favor multi-textured grooves over highflying solos." -- URB

Turntablist DJ Logic has made a name largely by playing his turntables outside of the typical musical spheres with which DJ's are most commonly associated. Logic, widely credited for introducing Jazz into the hip-hop realms, is considered by most as a jazz sensation, a highly respected session musician and innovative bandleader. Logic's diverse resume includes performing and recording with an array of musicians ranging from Medeski Martin & Wood, Christian McBride, Eldar, The Roots, Vernon Reid, John Mayer, Ben Harper, Charlie Hunter, Jack DeJohnette, Marcus Miller, Prince Paul and BB King. The mix-master has also earned his stripes as a highly sought after producer, adding his Midas Touch to countless remixes for artists such as Soulive, Nina Simone, Billy Holiday, The Weather Report and Global Noize to name but a few.

MOCEAN WORKER

“This is some funky shit. Like funky shit you can throw on at the bar-b-q and watch all the tube tops jiggle funky. The big band meets breakbeat sound just sweats groove. Dorn weaves the archival seamlessly into the atypical to create a fusion of the recognizable and the new." -- OkayPlayer.com

Mocean Worker aka Adam Dorn leads his eight piece band, which features some of New York City's most revered soul and funk players. Assembled by Dorn to bring to life the “breakbeat jazz" stylings of the Mocean Worker studio albums, the group is coming off a year of high profile performances, including Bumbershoot, Burlington Discover Jazz Festival and a residency at NYC underground tastemaker venue Nublu. The latter string of shows led NPR's “Weekend Edition" to declare: “At a small, sweaty club in the East Village of Manhattan there's something you don't see much anymore, young people dancing to live jazz." On Mocean Worker's fifth album, Cinco De MOWO!, released on his own nationally distributed imprint MOWO! Inc., special guests include the likes of Herb Alpert, Marcus Miller, Morley, Steven Bernstein and Cochemea Gastelum. Debuting on the Billboard “Heatseeker" Chart and leading to raves by music critics around the country, it's his funkiest, most infectious collection of songs to date.
