You know Jenny Scheinman even if you don't know her name. It's her exquisite violin and string arrangements woven into Lucinda Williams' West. On Bill Frisell's Intercontinentals, she's the magpie to his befuzzed guitar, often carrying the melody while the boys ramble. You'll find her, too, plying her instrument on Norah Jones' Come Away With Me or exploring intoxicating rock-jazz with the Scott Amendola Band, where she trades licks with Nels Cline and Tortoise's Jeff Parker. She is a fluid, impossible to pin down musician's musician just beginning to step into the spotlight in 2008.
On May 27th, Scheinman released her warmly compelling self-titled vocal debut. This summer, the acclaimed composer, violinist and singer will tour venues and jazz festivals throughout the Northeast. Her upcoming performances will exclusively feature songs from Jenny Scheinman, which combines original songs with renditions of old-time country and blues selections by the likes of Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Tom Waits, Mississippi John Hurt and others.
Also released May 27th, Crossing The Field (now available online and on vinyl with hard copy CDs this fall), her fifth instrumental recording, where lush, cinematic arrangements feature standout performances by longtime collaborator Bill Frisell, jazz pianist extraordinaire Jason Moran and a string orchestra led by founding members of the string quartet Brooklyn Rider. Ranging from sweeping symphonic passages to hard swinging jazz trios, the 12 original compositions and one Duke Ellington cover (Awful Sad) soar with elegance, conviction, and groove.
