Bill Cole is a musician, composer, educator and writer. Since its inception, Dr. Cole has led The Untempered Ensemble. He has performed and recorded Ornette Coleman, Jayne Cortez, Julius Hemphill, Sam Rivers, James Blood Ulmer, Fred Ho and many others. He has written acclaimed compositions for large and small groups: “The Seven Cycles," “Freedom 1863," and “Seasoning the Greens." He is the author of two biographies, John Coltrane and Miles Davis: The Early Years, as well as many articles as jazz critic for Downbeat, Coda and other journals. Cole will also lead a one-day workshop examining his specialty: non-Western wind instruments, including the Ghanaian atenteben, Chinese sona, Korean hojok and piri, South Indian nagaswaram, North Indian shenai, Tibetan trumpet and Australian didjeridu. Dr. Cole holds Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University.
