Firehouse 12's 2008 Spring Jazz Series continues on Friday, March 28th with a two-set performance by emerging bassist/composer, and Hartford native, Dezron Douglas and his quintet. The group is a subset of the Hartford-based collective, The New Jazz Workshop, and features longtime Douglas collaborators Josh Evans, Lummie Spann, David Bryant and Curtis Torian. This performance will feature original music from Douglas' forthcoming debut CD as a leader, which he will record with the band in New York this week.

The son of a gospel quartet leader, and nephew of first-generation bebop drummer/composer Walter Bolden (Stan Getz, Coleman Hawkins, Gerry Mulligan), Douglas was surrounded by music from an early age. But it was his mentor, jazz legend Jackie McLean, that would most shape his career as a jazz musician. Douglas met the late saxophonist and educator when he was 17, and was soon studying with him, and McLean sidemen, trombonist/composer Steve Davis and bassist Nat Reeves, at the Jackie McLean Institute at the Hartt School Music.

Douglas has since travelled the world as an in-demand bassist and sideman, performing and recording with such jazz luminaries as Andy Bey, Jon Faddis, Kenny Garrett, Kevin Mahogany, Branford Marsalis, Nicholas Payton and Pharaoh Sanders. He can also be heard on the recent releases, Marsalis Music Honors Michael Carvin (Marsalis Music, 2006) and Cyrus Plays Elvis (Koch Records, 2007), the latest CD from pianist Cyrus Chestnut. In addition to his own group and The New Jazz Workshop, Douglas currently performs with Chestnut and Eric Reed's Tenor Madness among others, and will appear on 2008 releases by drummer Eric McPherson and vocalist Jackie Ryan.
