La Belle Epoque music series 2008 is pleased to welcome perennial Toronto favourite Bill Mays in his first engagement in this exciting new space. With deep roots in jazz, gospel, pop and classical music, Bill Mays' eclectic, prolific career as pianist, composer and arranger spans five decades. Heard on hundreds of recordings, TV and movie sound tracks, Bill's concert and studio credits include a who's who of modern music, from Benny Golson to Gerry Mulligan to Sarah Vaughan. “Throughout the world of avid admirers and jazz connoisseurs, Bill Mays has become known as an innovator and major contributor." --Jazz Review.com

Joining Bill Mays are two revered Canadian rhythm section players with whom he has appeared many times in the past, most notably on record Live from the Montral Bistro, Neil Swainson on bass and Terry Clarke on drums. With each musician poised to play to their best advantage in the new performance space of La Belle Epoque, this is certain to be an evening of music making of the highest caliber, and one not to be missed.

About the Academy

Founded in 1991, The Academy of Spherical Arts in Liberty Village is housed in the historic premises of the Brunswick manufacturing company, producer of fine Canadian billiards tables and accessories. Expanded over time to include four distinct event spaces, the Academy is proud to be able to present live jazz in La Belle Epoque, an exposed brick and wood beam space with a lovely ambiance, good sightlines and great acoustic, newly outfitted with full professional lighting and sound facilities. This promising venue should delight many jazz fans still aching for a warm and inviting club to call their own.
