Music Legend Ike Turner Dies

SAN DIEGO--Ike Turner, whose role as one of rock's critical architects was overshadowed by his ogrelike image as the man who brutally abused former wife and icon Tina Turner, died Wednesday at his home in suburban San Diego. He was 76.

He was 76.

There was no immediate word on the cause of death.

As a music duo, Ike and Tina Turner were responsible for such hits as “Proud Mary." They were enshrined together as act in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.

Their life was chronicled in the 1993 music biopic “What's Love Got To Do With It," which was based on Tina Turner's autobiography.

The film earned Best Actor and Best Actress Oscar nominations for Laurence Fishburne and Angela Basset for playing Ike and Tina Turner, respectively.

Ike Turner managed to rehabilitate his image somewhat in his later years, touring around the globe with his band the Kings of Rhythm and drawing critical acclaim for his work.
